Prior to January 2010 never had any problems that kept me out of the water as in the space of 2005-2009 I had completed 450 of my 500+ dives to that point. January 2010 I hurt my back on the job when a patient shifted on a stretcher I was lifting and flipped me. I landed on my head with my body twisted which resulted in herniating and lacerating L5-S1 in my back. The injury and resulting surgery put me out of work for a year and out of the water for close to 4 years.

Prior to hurting my back I had been progressing through my tech certs to extended range as well as testing the OMS side mount system that was in development at the time. Side mount really appealed to me from a travel standpoint as I could dive Rec or tech with the same rig and tank hardware and lightweight.

After my back injury diving with doubles causes problems as lower edge of a backplate presses into my scar and plain hurts. Single tank set ups over multiple days gets real uncomfortable till I'm in the water where with side mount rec or tech I can dive non stop and no pain or discomfort. If it wasn't for sidemount I probably would have not gotten back in to diving.

Those 4 years I was out I kept up with the industry and goings on via the forums and publications. I don't get to dive as often as I'd like because of my work schedule but still get to dive in a regular basis.
