Get Fit for Galapagos Group....IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN IN!

Galapagos is an EPIC EPIC EPIC trip! Its one of two favorite destinations IN THE WORLD!!! 

 

But its also NOT a fall off the boat and float around and go up when your 60 mins or air is over/out. The waters of Galapagos are cooler and they carry MASSIVE amounts of nutrients to keep MASSIVE SCHOOLS OF PELAGIC HAPPY and well fed!

 

So that water is moving those nutrients around which results in a bit lower vis (not 200 ft and certainly not 20 ft ) as well as currents that bring those nutrients to the animals so prevalent there.

 

So what do we need to do to get fit for diving Galapagos?

 

  • A general level of aerobic fitness helps a great deal so we aren't so tired diving
  • A little upper body strength helps as well to get in and out of the pangas/zodiacs

 

That's basically it. I've asked the operator to help me develop a specific fitness program to help us use the next year to improve our overall fitness for this epic trip and I'll post it next week when its done. In the meantime lets just start easy....

 

  1. Walk for 10-20 mins a day
  2. Stand by a wall or door and push our body weight back and forth creating as much resistance as we can aka wall push ups
  3. Increase our quantity of water daily so that we are flushing our bodies out and naturally decreasing our appetites

Later we can add more things to help our legs be stronger but just getting started is the HARDEST PART! Sticking with it the 2nd hardest part. What you are doing is easy by comparison!

 

Of course you can do more but this will be enough to EASILY get started and more importantly...STICK WITH IT!!!

 

Don't add too much too soon or you'll do it for a couple of days and then quit. Let's just try to do something daily for the next year and see how tiny improvements add up quickly!

I'm going to participate in BOTH the Galapagos Get Fit Group in this topic and the SD Fit to Dive Challenge HERE.

 

I'm going to start VERY small so I will stay with it. (No effort is wasted and something is better than nothing!)

I'm going to shoot for every day but will be successful if I do SOMETHING 5 out of 7 days each week.

My first plan will be:

 

  • 10-15 mins of walking a day
  • Drink more water...(I currently drink only 1-2 glasses a day when not diving)
  • 15 wall push ups using my body weight and creating as much resistance as I can against the wall.

 

That's it. Later I will add:

 

Some sort of leg exercises to strenghen the quads, lower back, butt. (But not right away...I need some success first to add these since they are harder for me)

 

It takes 21 days to create a habit...so in 21 days I will try to add something else to the regime...but for now I want to start small and build CONSISTENCY and SUCCESS!!!

Hey Galapagos Goers...the #1 post in this thread is NOW UPDATED!!! Please share your journey with us. Its ok to not meet your objectives... I know I have only accomplished 2 of my 3 super easy goals each day. :(  But soon I wil get tired of not meeting my goals and I'll make the time to get my walking in regardless.

 

Progress is a journey...not a destination. So let's progress together!

YEA!!! I finally got my first 15 min walk in...actually it was 24 minutes!

And I got my 10 wall push ups and stretching in. YEA!!!
