You should not need an extra night for the whale watching.

Hello Joel,

 

     Sperm whales are in the area all year long.  Sightings are more common between November and March.  This will be my first trip to the island, so I do not know the specifics on when they offer the whale watching trips, but I believe it is something that is fit into the week of diving.

I see the approx water temps are about 78-82 F? Is a 3m wetsuit usually ok? I don't tend to be cold with just 2 dives/day (which I'm planning).

I am getting a real time report for the water temps right now. Using that we can speculate a bit closer where in that range the water temps will fall.

 

As for exposure suits here are the factors to consider:

 

1. Do you have a lot of lean body mass (produces heat) or 'natural insulation' as both will affect 'your level of comfort' in the water.

2. Do you live somewhere warm so sensitized to warmer weather/water? Or do you live someplace cold so sensitized to colder weather/water?

3. How many dives are you doing? The pkg includes 2 boat dives but what about shore diving? Will you be doing any of that? If our bodies are 98 degrees then it doesn't take much to draw the heat from it when the water is 80 or less.

4. Do you glide thru the water barely exerting any effort or are you all over the place either hunting, exploring, catching up with the group, swimming after critters or just trying to manage your buoyancy?  If yes to anything but 'gliding' then you will expend more energy which means you will be warmer naturally

 

• So many people will NOT need any thermal protection BUT WE DO SUGGEST A LYCRA SKIN TO PROTECT AGAINST STINGS/SCRAPES.
• Some people will wear 'extra thermal protection' because they are sensitive to 'cold' and perhaps do not move much in the water so will wear 5mil
• If you do wear some thermal protection then a 3 mil full length suit will be warmer than a 3mil shorty.
• If you do wear ANY thermal protection remember a couple of things...

 

1. Its better to have thermal protection and not need it vs need it and not have it.
2. If you are wearing thermal protection and get too hot....SIMPLY open the front of the suit and let fresh water in and you will automatically be cooled back down.

 

So I would say that a 3mil is perfect no matter what the temperature is because we can always cool off but we can't warm up!

TEMPERATURE UPDATE:

 

I've been told the temps TODAY are 28-29 C so 82-84 F.  So in a little over a month we may see a 2 degree temp drop so expect 80-82 if things hold as they have been so far.

 

And yes I'd still plan for a 3mil vs nothing unless you typically dive 'naked' without any thermal protection.

I am starting to think about my packing list. What laundry facilities are available to us?  It would simplify packing for 2 weeks if things can be cleaned. Thanks.

I have officially found out that the resort has ONLY 3 cf100 tanks in total and ALL MUST BE NITROX as they are O2 cleaned for nitrox. I have sent you a message to see if you want them as nitrox or pass them onto someone else. They are available for the 2nd week to anyone who needs them. They are alum for those curious and as I mentioned before...they are ONLY NITROX.

 

Pat if you want them they will be yours. If you do not wish to dive nitrox then I will open them up to someone else. Thank you!

Any word on the laundry facilities?

We are STRUGGLING to find a solution on this so far. I will ask the dive guides if anyone knows someone who would like to make a little extra money. There are supposedly laundry mats available...still trying to get something firm on this. I promise I'm working it!

For those of us flying in on the Friday, will we be able to clear into the dive shop on Saturday and then grab tanks for some shore diving Saturday afternoon?  It would be nice to get things dialled back in after some time out of the water. Thank you.
