Resort

Set upon Dominica's most storied property, Fort Young Hotel embraces a rich and soulful history that reinforces the hotel's welcoming and homely ambiance.  While the hotel first opened in 1964, the land upon which it sits dates back to 1699.  Having evolved from a military fort to a central police station and, presently, a hotel, the land has been inundated with an undeniable sense of character; a colorful and cultural vibrancy that defines Fort Young Hotel.

Fort Young Hotel offers an array of dining options and eateries, ranging from sophisticated fare to lax seaside ambiance.  With the All-Inclusive, Island-Included program, guests can indulge from sunrise to sundown in the Executive Chef's locally-sourced dishes in a peerless coastal locale.  Start your day with an omelette or a classic creole salt-fish from our breakfast b buffet, washed down with fresh juice squeezed from locally grown fruits.  If your day's adventures allow, delight in a long lunch at either of our waterside settings.

At Fort Young Hotel, off-property experiences are a natural extension of our guests' stay.  Our highly trained and largely local team ensures that our full-service amenity-rich property is the gateway to exploring Dominica.  Spend your days filled with city, land or sea excursions, maximizing the Dominica Experience, while learning about the island's deep history and culture.

Located in Roseau, Dominica's capital and only "downtown", Fort Young Hotel sits in the main marina with the ferry port and market just a minute's walk from its entrance, yet affords its guests a luxurious sense of seclusion  From your room's oceanfront balcony, the sights and sounds of the capital vanish, replaced by the gentle lapping of waves and endless expanse of the sea and sky.  Fort Young Hotel's proximity to the island's most sought-after adventures bring guests to the heart of the vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, land and sea excursions and luxury experiences Dominica has to offer.

Dominica is most known for its deep waters and lush landscape, but what makes Dominica stand out among other locations is its deep rooted cultural history and preserved sites.  Naming the island "Waitukubuli" - meaning "tall is her body" - to reflect the mountainous and elegant fertile land, Dominica is home to the largest native population in the region, with around 2000 indigenous Kalinago people still living on the island, which keeps the cultural history and awareness alive.  A representation of a pre-Columbian village, the Kalinago Barana Aute is one of the island's most rich cultural attractions.

Swimming with the Whales:

We have received very special permission to have 2 groups of 6 on 3 day licenses vs 5-6 day licenses so that we can support 12 whale/diving combo's and 6 divers only for two of our 3 weeks. The first week will be diving only as I could not secure the whales license for that week.

Once our permits were approved we set up the snorkeling using the most economical of the two boat options. YANYAN is a smaller vessel but very sea worthy and will serve our whale watching needs comfortably as well as economically. The boat will have 1 in water snorkel guide and 1 boat capt with us and no more than 2 guests will be in the water with the whales at one time.

Once permit dates were approved and confirmed by the Fisheries Division we had to pay for the full permit fees and most of the vessel fees, in order to secure the dates. Since the full cost of he permits + a very large deposit on the vessel has been made in order to secure the dates,  that means the end user deposit will be equally high since once final names are submitted for the license, they can not be changed. We will ascertain the final name submissions dates but the non refundable deposit amount will have to cover those amounts. All trip goers will need trip insurance to cover their investment in the event they need to cancel as names will not be interchangeable once submitted to the govt of Dominica.

Snorkeling with the whales is a full day excursion each day (8 hours) and starts early in the morning at 8am, so guests should arrange for packed lunches to take out to sea each day.

YAN YAN
The vessel ‘Yan Yan’, is a 30 ft. island hopper and is chartered daily for a full 8 hour day and is ideal for 1-6 persons with 6 being the maximum.

Tours

Guided Tours

Explore the storied capital on a one-hour stroll around Roseau's Victorian buildings and craft markets or, for a more ambitious adventure, take a guided hike along the Waitukubuli National Trail, the Caribbean's longest consecutive walking trail.  Of course, one of the most revelatory tours of the island begins right at your bedroom door, joining an island guide on a heritage walk through the historic Fort Young Hotel.  Our concierge or Activities Desk representatives will be happy to curate a guided experience perfectly matched to your ambitions and abilities.

Trafalgar Falls and Titou Gorge

Titou Gorge is one of the most unique marvels of the island.  This special attraction was formed by volcanic lava which cooled and split open, leaving this natural cave.  Swim up the "throat" of a cave to a gushing waterfall located inside the gorge, then proceed through the picturesque village of Trafalgar leading the island's iconic twin waterfalls sitting as tall as 125 feet high.  Difficulty: Easy, Duration: 30 minutes.

Waterfalls

The small island of Dominica is comprised of a remarkable 365 rivers, featuring 12 waterfalls throughout its lush rainforest.  Whether you choose to hike or drive to your destination, Dominica's cascades are just a short trip from the Fort Young Hotel.  Dip a hot spring at Trafalgar's twin drops or clamber across rocks through the rainforest on a 45 minute hike to the dramatic Middleham Falls, which drops 200-feet from the looming cliffs above.  There are boundless sights to be seen.

Canyoning

Canyoning, otherwise known as canyoneering or waterfall rappelling, is one of the most fulfilling and exhilarating ways to explore the magical depths. of Dominica.  Descend into the island's canyons and discover the lush rainforest and waterfalls within the ins and outs of striking rock structures.  Fort Young Hotel's concierge is happy to arrange a canyoning adventure in which you will put on a wetsuit, harness and helmet and traverse into otherworldly nooks of the Nature Island. Guided Tour.  Safety training and gear provided.

Birdwatching

Accompany the island's leading birders and ornithologists for an insider's look at Dominica's vibrant avian paradise.  A guided nature hike will take you deep into the rainforest to observe and learn about the beautiful and seldom-seen birds which call the nature island home.  Dominica is home to more than 170 species of birds including Blue-headed Hummingbirds, Ruddy Quail-doves, Caribbean Elanias, Blue-headed Euphonia, Lesser Antillean Flycatchers, Pearly-eyed Thrashers and two Amazonian Parrots which are endemic to the island: the Sisserou Parrot and the Jaco Parrot.
