Another great day of SoCal diving.... I joined some buddies at Shaw's Cove this morning, in Laguna Beach (Orange County, or "O.C." as some of you may have heard of). Here in SoCal, we've been skunked for much of the winter with an uncharacteristically large quantity of rain and all-around bad weather, keeping most of us out of the water. Since I and many others are getting desperate, I headed north to dive Shaw's Cove, despite poor dive reports.

It was just another beautiful day of SoCal diving.... First, I had to run through the surf in full scuba gear and dive under a large breaker like a bodysurfer to avoid being swamped. Then my buddies and I dropped down into a soup-like 3-5' of viz. We were all experienced, which means the two buddy teams made it almost halfway through the dive before becoming separated. A heavy surge made it unadvisable to explore the crevices that make this site fun (you could feel the turbulence in the water). And fortunately, my excellent Henderson wetsuit kept me mostly insulated from the 50-degree water (cold even by SoCal standards!).

Actually, it wasn't as bad as I make it out. I'm firmly in the camp that says the worst day of diving is better than the best day at work (or plopped in front of the TV). And we managed to see a little bit in the murk, such as a large sheep crab and the ubiquitous garibaldi and urchins. But I can't wait till the weather and dive conditions get back to normal.......

Having spent the day cleaning house and doing laundry.. I would have prefered to have spent the day in such awful dive conditions. I'll take 3-5' vis over a load of towels any day.
Thanks for sharing. If I can't be diving it is nice to know that my fellow SDers are out getting wet.. :taz:
