OK, folks. I'm sold. It was mentioned in my NAUI class, but it didn't really hit home until reading this thread. I've signed up for DAN and the Master Insurance plan. I feel better now and I only had to spend $65 total - not bad at all considering all of the benefits.

Jeff-

That will be the best $65 you've ever spent if you actually need it. VERY Smart choice!

Plus, who is to say that the other companies will be recognized everywhere? You do not want to hear, "I've never heard of them. You pay us cash now, and get the money from your little insurance company later" in your time of need.

Be very aware of the limits on various dive insurance policies.

Some, for example, are void if you spearfish. Now many people don't - but some do!

Some have depth limits. The time to argue about your "intended" depth for a given dive is NOT after an accident!

I've got DAN, even though I have some major issues with the governance of DAN and their "hide the ball" games in that regard. Nonetheless, their dive insurance is the clearest and has the fewest weasel-words in it - so that's what I buy.

If you need a chamber, and don't have it, you definitely won't like what that costs.

DAN is the only dive insurance I will consider, and I cannot imagine diving without it. Very straight forward coverage, won't be leaving home without it.

I too support only Dan (especially since I work at Duke Univ.) and have the Master level insurance. For those that are considering other forms of dive insurance, here is a nice site I found from undercurrent.org that breaks down the main ones (DAN, Padi and two others I hadn't heard of):

I wouldn't get in the water without my divers insurance, the cost of the insurance is less then even 10 minutes in the chamber.....

Ditto what Genesis said... you may not intend to go deep, but why put that kind of limit on your insurance when you could need it most! Silly things happen... and when they do, DAN's the best at covering you. I used to have the AGENCY brand, but their limits were way too stringent! :mauswhip:

You know, this place is getting expensive! :lmao: I found this place a couple of days ago and first I bought a membership, then I decided to do Epcot, and now I bought the DAN Preferred plan. (wasn't sure which plan I would need, and for the difference in cost I decided to go with the Preferred).

DAN all the way. Before I even did my first dive, my cousin's wife gave me a little story about what an evac and trip to the chamber did to their finances. I was signed up the next day.
