One of the top medically related obstacles to diving is in fact, finding a dive knowledgeable medical person to give an evaluation and informed opinion as to an individual's ability to safely dive. For example I did an experiment here in Dallas. I walked into 8 dive shops, told them I was thinking about taking up the sport, but had asthma. I asked them for names of dive knowledgeable docs in the area that I could go to. 0/8 could recommend someone to me. I know that DAN has a list of physicians who they recommend, but it does not cover all areas.
I am proposing that we have lots of divers on this board, that have over the years found physicians, dentists, nurses, physical therapists, etc who dive, and/ or can give good advise to divers or potential divers. I would like to start a data base of such people for two reasons. 1) To have a referral list for ourselves for anyone who has a dive related issue and wants to go see someone about it. and 2) To collect names of medically related specialists to offer them combined diving and continuing education trips.
If anyone has names of medical people that they know and recommend, here is what I would suggest. Send me a private message with their name, city, and contact info. I will contact them individually and ask if they would want to be in a dive medicine referral base. If so, I will keep their info in a private database, and refer to people on a case by case basis depending on the individual's medical condition and location.
This will of course start out slow, and I will only keep records of the medical folks who agree. I do think that if there is a way to hook up divers/ potential divers with diving savvy health care providers, then all parties benefit.
Please use this thread to give me your thoughts, discuss your experiences with medicine, etc, but send specific names to me privately.

Mark, that is an excellent idea!! I think I recall you and Narwhal discussing such a database in Cozumel! Kudos!!! I know it will be a tremendous asset once you get it off the ground. BTW...that reminds me...I've run into a number of nurses who are also divers! I'll pm you their information!

HMMMM, Diving Nurses! (said in his best Homer Simpson voice). I know Narwhal would be happy to take them through his "advanced course".

I am not sure that they would be able to keep up with the SD.com women, but all are welcome. Thanks for the referrals.

I know some diving nurses who would fit right in (one's a member already).

Excellent! Relay to him/ her that CEU's on a dive trip are possible. And the lecture topics will even be interesting!

Hi Triggerfish!! Tanks for dropping in! NP told me he'd met you! Perhaps you'll feel comfortable contributing the health and medical questions!

We look forward to meeting you on a future Single Divers trip and of course on the site as you find places to contribute...ask questions...or just show your humorous side!!

Please consider posting an intro so that others can get to know you as well!! We find we have to make NP share sometimes with the rest of us!! LOL!! :welcome:

Well Hi there, trigger. So you are checking out this site. That's great!
WW, be careful asking her to show her humorous side! Very funny, but not for the weak of heart.
Glad you are posting, T. and ask around if the diving medical gang there want to be listed in a referral data base. Patient referrals + helping divers + CE trips in cool dive locations. What more could they ask for?

Hey NP...just sent you the name of my Diving Dentist....he is a hoot and would be an excellent addition to the database!

I can tell you right now if you are a diver and don't use a dentist who is a diver...SWITCH now!!!

Here's why...I was getting a crown done and he was go to schedule the temp crown work when he stopped and said..."When is your next dive trip?" As it turns out it was in 2 weeks and the permanent crown would not have been ready in time and he said "NO" and "HECK NO" to diving 100+ feet on a temporairy crown.

Now you can't imagine how relieved I was...had it been anyone else I may of had all kinds of problems that I don't even want to think of!!!

Moral of the story...dive with a diving doctor and a diving dentist and dive MUCH SAFER!!! And if you can dive with a diving nurse...then you are just plain lucky!!! LOL!!! :welcome:

Sounds good to me....I just spoke with a pharmacist who is an avid diver and is interested in the database. I'll pm you her info!

w2, i'm with you. diving docs are fine, but when it comes to helping when the lake michigan flu is running rampant on a boat, it's the nurses holding hands and wiping mouths!

and, NP...i guess it depends on your definition of "lucky" !!
