Well I am working on it....Or ohhhhmmming on it as it were. Leaving for Coz on saturday. I'll have to wait until I get back to try and put the pieces together. Biggest problem seems to be the flights. Hard to get there from here within the time guidelines you set.....Hard to get anywhere from here!

I can work with you on flights. Let me know what you come up with and also what airport. You can also layover in Big D....lots of people have guest b-rooms and you already have tons of friends here including me!!! -ww

So to start the ball rolling we'll be shooting off fireworks this 4th of July in Morehead City, North Carolina!

w2, somehow mentioning 'fireworks', 'penetration' and 'zendiver' in the same sentence gets me kinda tingly......

How late does the NC wreck season usually run?

(Funny, when I lived there I didn't have enough experience to feel comfortable diving there. Now that I'm living in Florida and diving more, I'd really like to do some of the NC wrecks, and this looks like the group to do them with!)

I'm thinking that late September/early October would be nice, but don't know if what the storm schedule is like at that time of year.

Thanksin advance,
Grier

Season is May to Oct. Here is a breakdown on which months are good for what:

May...after winter storms so more ops to find things on the wrecks. Also shark mating season so HUNDREDS of sharks vs. dozens. Cooler temps...68-75

June..Warming up...good air temps so very calm seas and beautiful diving. 72-78

July...Weather is usually awesome and conditions great. Water temps usually 75-82 and you still see lots of sharks but they are thinning some as the water warms up...down from hundreds to dozens.

Aug...Weather is awesome and conditions great. Water temps are warm 80-85 but the sharks are more scarce...however you'll still see them every trip.

Sept...Hurricane season...pass

Oct...Oct 1-3 is Seafood Fest and it celebrates the end of hurricane season and it is also usually the first weekend we go out after the storms....we have traditionally made HUGE finds this weekend....full bowl off the U-352...sterling silverware off the USS Schurz sunk in 1918 and LOTS OF BRASS stuff!!

So there you have a quick summary. July 4th is always good...in fact 2 years ago we recovered a porthole off a WWII victim sunk in 1942. Still tons of stuff to find if you like that sort of thing.

Please note: The govt does not protect these wrecks because they are not considered of historical significance. Queen Anne's Revenge however is protected and it is also in Morehead City (gotta love a deep dive destination that you can penetrate called Morehead...but I digress...)

Hope to see you there....you need 40 dives under your belt or more and at least AOW or equivilent. -ww

if that doesn't work try

German U-boats
Artifacts I can keep
Real wrecks not artificial reefs
HUGE and plentiful large animal encounters
SHARKS
RAYS
Turtles
WWI wrecks
WWII wrecks
china...portholes...silverware....bullits....floor tile....brass....

oh yes and Triggerfish!!! if you are Male
and Zendiver if you are Female
LOL!! :teeth:

Just a friendly warning to anyone flying in for these trips....don't try to bring back any of the bullets -- the TSA will NOT be very understanding.

A couple of months back, there were a couple of divers flying back from Guam and Chuk (Truk) that were taking back some recovered ammo from their dives and the TSA caught them. While charges weren't filed, they missed their original flights, dealt with interrogation and a stern warning - hardly worth it. And they didn't get to keep their souvenirs!

Also, unexpended ammo is inherently unstable and should be considered dangerous -- yeah, I know, I'm sounding like a sissy diver, this is just a friendly warning.
