Today I made the longest deepest dive ever to 42 feet that lasted only 12 minutes.
Today I dived, once again, with Roy Jensen. Roy is a dear friend. I met him several years ago when I joined the Volunteer Scientific Research Team. As members of the team, we dived regularly together in the Gulf conducting fish counts off Lee County. We'd also head out on Roy's boat from time to time to put a few fish on the table. Roy loves to laugh, Roy laughs easily, Roy laughs often. Roy laughs at himself as easily as he laughs at the rest of us. Once after spearing a Mangrove Snapper, he grabbed it by the lip. About 30 minutes later we were able to pry its teeth out of the bone of his thumb. Every time he told the story, he laughed. Every time I told him, "there's a reason they call them snapper," he laughed.
Ever the rascal, he once help me show a dive buddy from Pittsburgh some good diving in the Gulf. Kelly had never even seen a mango before, so Roy brought along a couple off his tree. Roy explained how to eat them. Peel it with your teeth and eat it like an apple. Kelly loved it, but by the time she was finished, she had more mango on her than in her. At that point we were both rolling. Roy's good cheer was contagious and soon Kelly was laughing at herself as well.
Today, Tom and I dived with Roy once again. We took Roy down on the Edison Reef and left him there. Today is Roy's last dive. Cancer took Roy from us two weeks ago at age 57. Today began his longest dive ever. I'm truly glad Roy is my friend and dive buddy. I'm sorry the dives together will be no more.
Roy is sitting at 42 feet under a portion of the bridge rubble, he is surrounded by the life he loves - Jewfish, Gag Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, Tomtates, Belted Sandfish, Tunicates, Sponges........................
