This is unfortunate news indeed. I hope everyone in the affected areas manages to get out before the hurricane actually hits. Hopefully it won't be as devastating as Katrina was.

Regardless, *we* up here are wishing the best for *you* down there. Take care and stay safe.

I'd offer my home, but it looks like I've got my sister's family and maybe some of my girlfriends coming in as well. Looks like a full house and bases loaded in Round Rock!!!
Better stock on up on Monopolova and Mt. Gay Rum. It's gonna be more fun than a barrel of Mona Monkeys!!!

City of Lubbock is preparing for evacuees. Looks like like the 3rd most powerful storm in US History is aiming to hit most of the Texas cities - Houston, Corpus, San Antonio, Austin, all the way thru Dallas-Ft.Worth, and rain hard as far as the Panhandle. I guess everyone in Texas east of the Pecos river is going to experience some of Rita this weekend.

University of Texas at Austin is asking faculty to put up faculty from sister campuses in Houston and Galveston. Hotel room availability here is already limited.

I am leaving first thing in the morning for College Station (<120 miles inland on high ground). I will spend thursday and friday on campus (Tx A&M) working on my dissertation. Hopefully the storm will dissipate quickly once it comes ashore. If things get bad in College Station I may be asking for floor space in dallas.

I am still hoping the heaviest part of the storm comes ashore in Kenedy County (<500 people, easy to evac, and very little property to damage).

Thought I would let everyone know that I am now in Dallas at my sister's place. It took me the better part of seven hours to get here from Houston. I-45 was totally packed with traffic all the way.

I am going to be here through Monday so I plan to make the HH on Friday at J. Gilligan's. I also learned that one of my favorite country bands, Diamond Rio is playing at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth Saturday night. Might go check it out.

Time to hit the rack ...

Mitch, good to hear you escaped early, and not bad on the trip. I figured it would take much longer.

I will spend thursday and friday on campus (Tx A&M) working on my dissertation.

Hon, you are likely to spend all day on the road if you haven't left yet. I-45 is reported to be all one-way north, both sides of the hiway starting at 9am today, but it will still be hell.

A few suggestions for anyone hitting the road, just in case one might help...

(1) Take more drinking water than you think you'll need. No pit stops.

(2) Take zip lock bags and a secure container to hold used zip locks. No pit stops.

(3) Take room deordorizer. Whew.

(4) Check your radiator along with the rest of your engine before you leave. Wear cool clothing. Windows down and AC off when you're stalled or moving slowly.

(5) Finally, take fill 3 or 4 gallon bleach jugs with non-drinking water and take it, in case your car overheats. Many will.

If you are reading this from the coastal area, you're late leaving. This one is bigger than 1900 storm that level Galveston, the biggest Texas has had in recorded history.

It looks like it is projected to retain hurricane status winds inland as far as Dallas. It could be Oklahoma's first hurricane.

God be with you all...

Mitch, good to hear you escaped early, and not bad on the trip. I figured it would take much longer.

It did help that I left in the early evening and already had a full tank of gas when I left. I also took some backroads. Even then, it took me three hours to reach a point, I-45 north of Conroe, that I normally could reach in a hour.

If folks haven't left Houston yet, you might want to try to take some back roads and smaller highways towards College Station...then small highways to hook up to 35E going into Dallas. My dad's business partner was down in Houston yesterday on business and he only had about 30 minutes of stop-n-go traffic and the rest of the way was smooth sailing.
