My wife hates the idea of breathing underwater. She snorkles and likes that but just can't deal with breathing out of a reg. We floated around the Lagoon at cocoview where she could stay on the survace and I swam beneath her letting her breath with my octo and she just hated it....
On top of that she also hates to fly so given where we live, it makes it difficult to get her to go with on dive trips..

Well, since I finally have an SO who doesn't dive...

Distinct lack of water deep enough to dive in where she lives. Completely landlocked with nothing but relatively shallow rivers around, and getting to deep (and relatively warm) water involves international travel. Plus, for some reason she is nearly incapable of breathing continuously. Even on dry land she has a tendency to hold her breath. The good news is she doesn't mind staying on the surface to keep an eye on the boat. She likes the pictures that I bring back, though. :cool2:

Cheers!

Jim

Yes, this is an introduction to the fact that I have been seeing a lovely schoolteacher since August of 2006.

It is also an admission that she is a non-diver and will remain one. The reasons involved are quite simple. She loves boats and being on the surface. She wants nothing to do with being under the water.

The good news is that she knows that I have a passion for diving. She wouldn't want me in her life any other way. She encourages me to go diving while she does things with her college-age daughter and does "girly things" (her term- not mine) that I don't enjoy. It prevents us from suffocating each other as we have both been single for much our lives. That lack of suffocation keeps our connection strong.

I have leveled with her about the risks of me being a wreck diver in the Great Lakes. She still wants to hear the stories of the wrecks that I dive. She is a history teacher after all :birthday: . She has no interest in diving them herself. She sees that history through my eyes.

While I would never push her to take up diving, she will go on diving trips with me and be shore support. I hope to one day to introduce her to other members of this site.

Yes, an avid diver can have a non-diver as a significant other and not lose anything.
A person should be judged in this life not by the mistakes that they make nor by the number of them. Rather they are to be judged by their recovery from them.

My XSO did not dive with me because she knew I would take her to about 200' and cut the air. LOL OK now that I said that I will never get a SO from here. Make a note to self keep mouth/fingers in control. :wakawaka: Dam no dates for me. :cool2:

Welcome ScubaFrog...thanks for your introduction and EVEN BETTER...jumping right in and splashing around a bit! This is a great thread and I'm glad you found our "Married But Buddyless" divers section. I'm one of the proud members of this subforum too! :cool2:

So why is she terrified of the water? (I was too...after 3 near drownings and 1 complete resuscitation...you kinda have some issues...) :-D

But you can over come them. :wakawaka:

My SO apparently had a bad experience in a swimming pool when she was younger and despite my best attempts to talk her into trying Scuba she will have no part of it :wakawaka: . But she has no problem with traveling to Tropical Places with me and as I try out some new scuba gear and check out the fishies :-D she runs into town and will try out her new CC and check out the guys in there 30s wearing speedos :cool2: . My policy with trying to talk people into scuba diving is simple, I don't Try, if they have some kind of fear or problem with being underwater then I would not try to talk them into scuba. Now kinda off topic but my brother lives right across the channel from Dr Bill near Catalina Island and he has tried scuba but do to a sinus condition he cant equalize underwater, I think he said he can go underwater about 3 or 4 feet then the pressure starts hurting his ears. Back to the SO and me, I think taking 3 or 4 days or maybe even a week apart from each other is healthy for our relationship..Its just a matter of trust that cuts both ways.

I originally learned to dive with my son. He has since grown, moved out on his own and usually is not available as a dive buddy.

About 18 months ago, after this thread was started, I got married to a lovely "bubble watcher" as one of my instructors, a woman, referred to her. Last summer the instructor persuaded her to take a certification course, but she is far from comfortable with diving, having had the course and about 2 additional dives.

However, I have a new plan! One of her daughters (my step-daughter for those trying to follow the mixed family nonsense) seems brave enough to take the class, so I have signed her up. The class starts this week. If her daughter takes to the sport, I won't have to pressure my wife because she will want to dive to keep an eye on her daughter! If it doesn't work, at least the daughter can be another dive buddy.

Well, my SO is afraid of sharks. But after a bit of persuasion I got him to sign up for the Open Water class, with me as his instructor of course. After one day in the pool he was so excited. I finished up his cert dives this weekend and even got two of his advanced dives done. Am I good or what? Hopefully he won't freak when we go into the ocean and he sees his first shark.

Since SCUBA is such a large part of my life, I basically said either you learn to dive or I can't take this relationship to the next level. I made a lifestyle choice a long time ago and part of me finding a partner is to share my adventures with some one. I can't do that if they can't dive.

:teeth:

She was caught in a rip current as a little girl. I managed to get her in the pool at my mothers house once about 20 years ago.
