I'll bet there were times when he would look at it and think back....
But if he'd bought a t-shirt instead, he could look at and think back without thinking, "I was an idiot at 19. What was I thinking to put a naked woman on my arm."

A discrete one on the ankle or the small of the back is OK with me, but not the "landscape" tattoos. No thanks!

screen printing technology wasn't that great back then
Actually, at that time a t-shirt was plain white and considered underware. My point was you don't need to get a tattoo to remind yourself of a period in your life. If that's the reason for a tattoo, it's a pretty weak reason. OTOH, if you want a tattoo, you don't need a reason and you don't have to justify your decision to anyone except yourself.
I agree with the body billboard comment
I personally don't see much of a difference except an obvious tattoo is more open and honest while "a discrete one on the ankle or the small of the back" seems to be more of an attempt at a halfway measure. Less honest, yet still detracts from the amazing beauty of the human body. IMHO, there's nothing you can tattoo that is as beautiful and as sexy as the skin before the tattoo.

Wait ... I HAD a naked woman on my arm at 19. But I was indeed an idiot - I should have chosen a different naked woman!I'll bet there were times when he would look at it and think back....

No kidding ... that's gonna be one LONG-STEM rose in a few years! At the dive park this weekend I saw a young woman with a very large tatoo that covered the entire upper breast region that was exposed by her lowcut shirt. From the design it must have covered the entire breast region. Hate to see what aging does for that tattoo. Also saw one whose arms were both fully covered with tattoos.
A discrete one on the ankle or the small of the back is OK with me, but not the "landscape" tattoos. No thanks!

Why does a mtn biker need a tattoo to remember crashing? That's what the scars are for!I was a pro mountain biker for many years. I have a mtn biker on one shoulder that was taken from a picture of me on a magazine cover (crashing)

I got plenty of those as well! I just thought it ironic that the only cover I made (though I was world champion twice) was of me crashing...a career ending crash at that...I was able to keep racing but not at the professional level.
I don't think that having a discreet tattoo is at all trying a "half measure" My tattoos are for me...I know that some people don't like them and that in my line of work, they aren't readily accepted (though it's becoming more of a non issue) So I choose to have them where only when I decide to have them exposed, does anyone HAVE to see them. I'm 35 and haven't had a tattoo in over 10 yrs but am soon getting a new one..one to show to myself and others where I am in this stage of my life...I respect those that don't approve of them, and I do agree that the human body is a beautiful thing, but humans have been adorning their skin with ink since we no longer had fur (another philosophycal discussion) and it's what I and millions of others choose to do to/with our bodies...and I still think they're sexy
