Sorry this is a bit belated:

Zak was well-known and well liked in the PNW diving community before he moved to Florida to take a position with Pro-Dive as a course director. I did business with him as a customer when he was the manager of the Everett Underwater Sports dive shop. Just so happens my first warm water dive was with Pro-Dive when I was living in Florida.

I just don't know what to say here. I was shocked by this event and my thoughts go out to his family.

I was sorry to hear about a diver dying, but I think this happened a couple months ago.

But seriously...it seems that we were not aware of this on the site...thank you for sharing and I'm sorry that one of the PNW's finest has passed in our sport. -ww

No kidding? I did say "sorry" and "belated", but I guess you missed that? Perhaps you need to look up the meaning of the word. One thing for certain, I don't need snotty responses like this!

Very sad to read this, as it is with any diver who passes away while diving. Are there any "details" on what happened? Interested in the cause in case it can be educational to other divers. My condolences to both the family and friends.

It appears, as with the great majority of rebreather deaths, that the details are unavailable and will continue to be so. This is certainly one of the most frustrating things about trying to find out what is safe or unsafe about the rebreathers, their use, their construction, and their use.

Thanks, PerroneFord... I wasn't aware he was on a rebreather.

Let's try to be respectful here. This thread is, after all, about a man who has died. A very sad situation for his family and friends.

Well, Briny misunderstood my post, but perhaps this man was a close personal friend and he's upset. I'm sure noone here meant any disrespect, but if he were a friend of mine, I might take the smilies and other light comments in a way other than how they were intended.

I didn't know Zak, in fact I'd never heard of him before I read the stories of his death, but everything I've read indicates he was a fine man. He apparently has lots of friends in the dive industry, especially in the PNW, SE Florida and Belize.

Briny, my post was not meant to be snotty or disrespectful in any way. I apologize since it obviously came across that way to you. My sympathy to everyone who knew this man.

A source close to the situation told me that probably no details will be forthcoming because his widow doesn't want an autopsy and apparently his gear was not sequestered. All we know is they found him dead at 170fsw. He was using a Megalodon rebreather.

Zak had a very infectious personality, you only needed to meet him once to like him immensely. He was the voice/MC of our annual Diver's Fair put on by Underwater Sports when he was here in the NW.
