A few moons ago, I started a thread entitled, Where Is Your Hair?

So now that I know where your hair is when you dive, I'm wondering how your hair is after you dive? (Especially you saltwater types.)

I've read horror stories elsewhere about hair being excessively dry to the point of breaking, colour jobs being corrupted, and other assorted tales of nastiness.

How do you ladies (and gentlemen) cope with the toll that saltwater takes on your hair?

And no, a baseball cap or a shaved head is not an option! :dontthinkso:

I guess the answer is conditioner but the only harsh conditions for hair that I've noticed (and I dive in salt water) is chlorinated pool water. Salt water isn't a problem.

A very large bottle of Biolage leave in conditioner with a wide comb I use before the first dive and every time I get out of the water. If I am going to do several days of diving I also take a deep conditioner to use in the evenings.

Even when not diving, I wet my hair down at night, put conditioner in it, and sleep with conditioner in my hair all night.

I do the same as Alikat and BeachBunny. Spray in leave-in-conditioner after diving (pool, ocean, lake) and run a brush through it. Then when home, shower, condition and leave it in all night.

My hair has definitely had more than one colour treatment in its life :lmao: but I have not had a problem with diving. When I started my hair was most of the way down my back. I used to braid it and then use a spray in conditioner after. I also use a soy milk shampoo and conditioner by Healthy Hair Concepts that is amazing. I use a ton of the conditioner when I shower after a dive and comb it through in the shower and rinse and my hair has been great!

Not fair, cause baseball cap is my answer. I keep one with me on any trip I go on, whether it be dive or not. Hair starts to get unruly (when I've let it grow out a little bit) and on the hat goes.

I go with the short hair/buzz cut treatment AND a ball cap. Guys do have it easier than the girls.

Condition, condition, condition!

Your hair is porous and will absorb whatever is in the water. It also filters whatever is in the water. So chlorine is not the only thing damaging to your hair. In addition, if you dive in sunny locations, you also have sun bleaching to consider.

I dilute my favorite conditioner so that I can use it in a spray bottle. I spray it on my hair BEFORE I dive (or get in the pool) This helps prevent my hair from soaking up chlorine, and protects it from the drying effects any water will have on your hair.

After the dive I also use a spray in conditioner being sure to saturate the ends of my hair, and I don't brush or comb if I can avoid it. I turn my head upside down and run my fingers through it instead. I end up with a nice natural look and healthy hair.

I typically wash my hair every other day; otherwise it will dry out. I try to stay with that schedule when I'm out diving. When I do wash my hair I make sure to use a good conditioner and LEAVE IT IN for the recommended amount of time - usually 3 minutes, before rinsing it out. I use no mouse or styling gel, hairspray on a rare occasion, and blow dry only the roots being careful to protect the ends.

I find salt water to be a pretty good gel. :cheerleader: I don't do anything other than normal when on a trip. I might actually comb my hair. :banghead:

I found for diving having my hair in a french(or is that freedom :lmao: ) braid worked best and lots of good conditioner.I now wear it short and the savings in conditioner have been spent...
