Here are some more things to think about when traveling:
5. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends at home so you can be contacted in case of emergency.
6. Notify by phone or register in person with the U.S. embassy or consulate upon arrival.
7. Don't leave luggage unattended in public areas. Don't accept packages from strangers.

I put a copy of my itinerary in an outside pocket on my luggage so if it gets lost the airline knows where to send and not just the final airport.
I, Latitude Adjustment (insert log in name), do hereby swear, (politely), that I shall not hold SingleDivers, (SD), nor any SD poster, (real or imagined), liable, nor shall I seek legal restitution, (real or imagined), for any perceived, (real or imagined), offenses I may incur, (or Incurrrrrrrrrr on talk like a pirate day), that may or may not be posted on this or any SCUBA related board, (real or imagined), by anyone, (real or imagined), anywhere, (real or imagined). Further, I void any right to privacy, (real or imagined), as it may, or may not relate to any posting, (real or imagined), about me, to me, for me, because of me, all about me, my dog, my cat, my bird, my monkey, my family, (real or imagined), my friends, (real or imagined), or my world, (real or imagined).
By all that is wet, I do hereby swear, (politely), and attest, upon pain of never diving again, (real or imagined), that I understand and affirm, that I agree to the above.

I do something similar, but have noted that with past luggage problems, the airline employees seldom made more a cursory attempt to get my goods back to their rightful owner/location. I have had particularly bad luck with DFW airport and avoid it like the plague. My favorite DFW incident involved my luggage and some other passenger's getting burglarized, with my stuff ending up in his bag, and his in mine (at least what was left of it). I got sent a bag full of dirty men's underwear, but oddly enough, my underwear were not in his bag. I always wondered what happened to them....I put a copy of my itinerary in an outside pocket on my luggage so if it gets lost the airline knows where to send and not just the final airport.
Back after a long absence - whew, too busy at work!

6. Notify by phone or register in person with the U.S. embassy or consulate upon arrival.
You can also do this online, right here: https://travelregist...state.gov/ibrs/
I've been doing it religiously since Dec 2004 when the Indian Ocean tsunami happened.... wasn't there, but the thought of being in a crisis overseas sure woke me up. The State Department notifies the local office in Lower Slobbovia that you're in the area and what your arrangements are, Just In Case.
