2004: Roatan Anyone??? Sept 11-18

1. Air temps are 80's during the day and 70's at night. (Is that what you are feeling Doug???)
2. Water temps are just at 80 degrees.
And yet another couple of hints for mosquitos FROM THE RESORT:
a. The resort sprays so there will be less skeeters on the resort then off of it.
b. When the wind blows a nice breeze...no skeeters...but put the skeeter juice on anyway in case the breeze stops.
c. If laying on the beach put your chair about 3 inches in the water...YEP in the water...that way the sand fleas don't get you and you can tan all day bug free.
d. Always apply the skeeter spray...Deep Woods Off works very well according to the resort IF you apply it daily and after getting wet and before going out for the evening.
e. Don't walk around with salt on you...not from sweat or from diving...seems they are attracted to moist, wet skin. So take a shower as soon as you can after diving and drive off tween dives to keep them off you.
See you all soon! Too bad Michael is not joining us...but we have an awesome group so I'm ready to have a blast!! -ww

Yeah Don! But bugs LIKE me!!! Also I am packing 2 sets of luggage for both my trips (can't come home in betwween) so I am really trying to streamline. Will figure it out! This from a lady who was born in Africa and goes back to visit?OK, this probably seems like a really silly question, but I am at my wit's end regarding what clothes to pack!!! Finally starting to throw things together (at the last minute... always my style!!!). Temps in Roatan.. tropical, hot, humid, even rainy, highs 90s, lows 70s. Usually to me that means skimpy, skimpy. BUT also sand fleas and the promise of several non-beautifying bites. Some info I have seen online advocates wearing long-sleeved clothing and pants to protect from the bites. I just can't imagine it!!!!!
Girls, are you just going to wing it with warm weather clothes and Deet to protect any exposed skin? Or should I hunt down a safari outfit????
You're allowed 140# of checked luggage; the porters, then airline, then porters will carry it all the way to your room ; take it all. When you have your dive bag ready to go to the dive shop, call for a porter. I did, with a pony bottle and a coffee maker. (Their coffee is bad, decaf worse.)
Pink skinned Lynn from Canuckland will have a challenge with the bugs, perhaps, but darker complected folks like you and me usually don't - as much. Try skimpy & freqeunt skeeter spray first.
But take call J.C.Pennys and see if they have light colored Khakis for short folks. If not, ask for referrals. Take some heavy rubber bands that just fall off of your ankles and wrists, and 90% Deet from a sporting goods store to spray on the khakis before donning. If you have to resort to long sleeve, blouse the pants and sleeves with the rubber bands (Kamala is military, albeit Air Force, so she shoud know how? Okay, SuperDave will!) to form a physical barrier at the ankles and wrists. Then spray the exposed areas again.
Or, stay off of the sand. Concrete sidewalk benind the buildings connects them all to the dive shop.
All the above is just in case, as I doubt you'll have a problem - jungle tours notwithstanding. They don't allow deet in some preserves!
Thanks guys for the extra info.
Oh, and I DID used to be military too!

Yeah I know: I've been branded a non-group person - doesn't play well with others. I am so upset. Let me know if you want to have some fun, without the drama - I'm good for that.

Looks like our gang on the long island is enjoying highs in the low 90s all week, lows in he high 80s, some clouds to break the sun, and a chance of T-showers on Tuesday. Current wind is 12 mph (don't know about Cdn$) to evapopate the "glow" on the gals and cool the bodies, wtih sunrise at 5:30am, sunset at 5:50pm. I like a country that has sunrises in the am and sunsets in the pm; so convenient.
I've seen other reports - from Cozumel, about the harbor shutting down and some panic as Ivan looks like it could veer that way, from Utilla near Roatan - just some swell and rain on the outskirts of the storm. Our freinds have been lucky and spared.
