Mosquito teeth...

Mosquitoes have four knife-like tools of serrated teeth that surround a pair of fine tubes — one for dripping a pain suppressor and one for sucking blood. See figure for a good view of one knife tool and a glimpse of a second one.

A common house mosquito (Culex sp.) stabs the skin with her sharp snout and saws in with her four knife tools to draw blood. She shoots in saliva laced with anesthetic (to escape notice) and an anticoagulant (to keep blood flowing). Then she sucks blood. :-D

In 90 seconds, she sucks enough blood to nourish 100 eggs or more — and is too heavy to fly. She makes a controlled descent to a close safe spot where she squeezes in on her abdomen. Water oozes out of the blood, filtered through the abdominal wall, and forms a large drop. Light again, she takes off.

It's October - time to thwack some zombies...

Yup. Time to bring out the Shaun of the Dead DVD again... Well, right after the Army of Darkness...

Groovy...

Here it is, Friday once again. Having just waded through this thread, I echo the spider thing....they're top of my list. The bigger it is, the bigger my reaction. When I lived in College Station (home of Texas A&M for all you non-Texans) I had major issues with fiddle-backs. I killed 'em by the thousands.

What probably gave me the worst case of arachnophobic heebie jeebies..... having a huge fiddle-back spider emerge from a crack in the wall of the shower...while I was IN the shower. Lack of clothing exponentially increases the freak-out factor.

The other thing that takes a very close second on my list is scorpions. When I lived in the lower Keys and worked in Key West, I envied the peeps who live ON Key West. All those chickens serve a purpose that tourists never hear about...... Chickens are tenacious scorpion hunters, and you will be hard pressed to find any scorpions on that island. But up at MM15, in the Saddlebunch Keys, none of the residents want to hear chickens.................and the scorpions are huge, and numerous. Hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em.

Do I wanna go back to livin' in the Keys?? Damned straight I do!! But I'm gonna piss off ALL of my neighbors and have chickens in my yard!!! My home will be the scorpion-free zone, a haven for poor saps like me! :D
