10 questions you should ask in an interview


LONDON, UK -- Just like you will be fielding questions from your interviewer, it is best to ask a few of your own. It shows that you are genuinely interested in working there, and that you have some concerns of your own. It also shows that you feel relatively certain that this is the place for you.

Asking the right questions to your prospective employer will show him or her that you are serious in you efforts to work for their company, and that you are an organized individual. You should steer clear of asking any personal questions or any questions that are not directly job related. Here are some questions that you should ask your prospective employer:

1) Why is this position available right now?
2) How many times has this position been filled in the past 5 years?
3) What should the new person do differently from the last person?
4) What would you most like to see done in the next 6 months?
5) What are the most difficult problems that this jobs entails?
6) How much freedom do I have in the decision making process?
7) What are my options for advancement?
8) How has this company succeeded in the past?
9) What changes do you envision in near future for this company?
10) What do you think constitutes success in this job?

It is very true - at interview you are often assessed on what questions you ask, not what you answer. Always a good idea to ask about how your performance is assessed in the job, what the indicators are (Key performance indicators), how often you are assessed and what training and development opportunites the position offers. It shows you see it as a long term opportunity too - which employers often like. Labour turnover (especially highly skilled) is often the biggest cost to any business.

Yup, avoid pay / benefits discussions until they bring it up or when you get an actual offer. Good tips.
Remember, email is an inefficient communications forum. You may not read things the way it was intended. Give people the benefit of the doubt before firing back... Especially if it is ME...! ;)

You mean you shouldn't tell them that you need six weeks of paid vacation a year to go diving with SingleDivers and a high speed connection so you can visit the board during business hours? :birthday:

I think we should all be paying close attention to this information so that when Shad and Neptuner start their ISP business down on some fabulous tropical isle in the Caribbean we will have the interview tools to beat out all of the other candidates! :birthday: They won't mind our asking for 6 weeks of vacation for scuba diving...in fact I would expect that to be one of their perks! :birthday:

In my initial interiew for the job I have now (and have had for 4 years) I told them I work to support my habit and if I didn't get to go diving enough (they were glad to hear that that was my habit) I wouldn't work there long. By golly, they hired me anyway. I even got them to put in my offer letter that I have the last Wed and Thurs of July off every year so I can go lobstering!

Seriously, these are all good tips and I hope I don't have to use them anytime soon!
