SCREEN NAME VS LOGIN NAME..EXACTLY WHAT'S IN A NAME???

On our site we have a login name that ONLY you can see and it lets you log into your account. We also have a SCREEN NAME OR DISPLAY NAME which is the names others see when you post on the site or participate in ANY manner. They can be the same or they can be different. Most find its easier for them to be the same but that is your choice.

Ok so you are new to SingleDivers.com and you registered using your standard non-descript login you use for everything. Only here you quickly realize that people GO BY THESE SCREEN/DISPLAY NAMES as their public identity on this site and now that standard login isn't so appropriate anymore. Unless you really want to be called abc123 or sjones87 or some other combination of letters and numbers.

Soon you are looking around and see people with names like WreckWench, or JesterDiver, or ScubaClint, or sqbagal or uwfan, or fingrabber or scubapunk! Sure we have members with names like Jerrymxz or peterbj7 or even just letters and numbers. In the old days we did not let anyone change their screen names BUT NOW WHEN YOU ARE NEW WE NOT ONLY ALLOW YOU TO CHANGE YOUR NAME BUT WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO SO as long as you do it before you take a trip!!! :cool1:

What to do?

1. First off think of several new names OR ASK IN YOUR WELCOME THREAD FOR OTHER MEMBERS TO HELP YOU.

2. Tell us a little about what you do so we can think of names related to your job, your passion or your favorite aspect of SCUBADIVING!!!

3. You can use the Introduction threads to have this discussion or start a new thread if you like.

4. After you or we come up with some names we can help see if those names are available AND we can help to make that change for you.

5. As long as you are new to the site or haven't paid any money...we are happy to change your name. If we already know you by your current screen name we hate to make changes...after all the join is run by a :blond: and I'll never remember the new one...I'll always know you by your original name. HOWEVER we will consider a change as long as you have not paid money. Once the financial databases are involved I can't facilitate a change.

Here are some examples to help you:

GREAT NAMES:

WreckWench (yeah I know its mine but it shows I love diving wrecks AND I'm down to earth enough to call myself a 'Wench') ;)
Cmdr. Clownfish (which is even better than WreckWench)
MNJoe (not even a real Joe)
ScubaPunk (don't make her go all 'punkie' on you!)
Capn Jack (also not his real name more like as in 'Sparrow')
Mermaid Lady
uwfan
fingrabber
ScubaClint
CoralReefer
ScubaTooth (no not a dentist but a really funny story)
JesterDiver
Buzo Guero (no not 'booze-o'... its Spanish!)
sqbagal

GOOD NAMES:

Jerrymxz
Peterbj7
Racer184

NAMES PERFECT FOR BEING CHANGED:

gmk (she knows we love her but she made payments before we could help her change her name)
abc123
lastname-firstinitial HolmesW
first initial & last name SuziZ
first and middle initial & last name TomTJones
any non-sensical set of letter snd numbers or just letters
ANY name/word that can't really be pronounced as in this is Kamala aka WreckWench when being introduced

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR NAME IF ITS PRIME FOR CHANGE & YOU HAVE NOT MADE ANY PAYMENTS TO SD.com:

You as the member can not change your own screen name. PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER ANOTHER ACCOUNT. Just send an email to admin@singledivers.com and include some suggestions or ask for help. We'll do our best to help you come up with something that has not been taken and make the change for you.

WHY WE DO NOT ALLOW NAME CHANGES AFTER YOU MADE A PAYMENT:

Actually the reason we HAVE to limit changes is our financial system and other underlying databases. Once you have made payments our financial system and other databases track your name and you are then too embedded to be able to change. Its a nightmare for us...when we try to chg your screen name it won't renew properly, and the list of gremlons just goes on and on for months and years after the change. So simply put... we just can't do it!

SO PLEASE CHOOSE A FUN SCREEN NAME WHEN YOU JOIN or shortly thereafter before you go on a trip or make any payments so EVERYONE is happy! :thankyou:

I'll tell you how I chose my name.

When first met you folks at Beneath The Sea, in '05, it was a smaller group and I sensed a definite Texas "flavor" to the group. One of my all-time favorite comic characters was Hipshot, a gunslinger from the "Rick O'Shay" comic strip by Stan Lynde. Hipshot was basically: a loner who needs people, a philosopher, loyal to his friends, and true to his word. Depending on how one looks at it, he was either a bad good-guy or a good bad-guy. So, I went with it. In Hipshot tradition, I often put a philosophical comment/quote in my signature section.

Quick tip - don't use an apostrophe ( ' ) in your name. It causes all sorts of fun on the payment gateway. I used it and the system seems to randomly change it to John/57 or other variations.
And on the eighth day, God said "OK, Murphy, you take over."

You know...when you first met us we DID have a ton of peeps from TEXAS at the show to support the show and help build up the area. We had very few members from NY/NJ at that time...in fact the main member was Tolly and he let us stay with him to save on expenses and help make doing the show feasible. The TRUE GIFT was so many people willing to PAY FOR THEIR OWN EXPENSES AND TRAVEL FROM TEXAS OR WHEREVER TO HELP GET THE SHOW OFF THE GROUND. Remember to qualify as a dive club you must give x number of hours to the show as volunteers and these AMAZING members FLEW to NJ to help make this happen!

However I love your screen name... Texas oriented or not! :respect:

And since the first year Rick aka Hipshot has give us TONS of hours of help every year which helps us reach our annual commitment. :cool1: Without him we'd not make our required number of hours! and :thankyou:

Kamala, et al,

I'm interested in changing my dive name on SD. My email is [Removed per Terms of Service]. Obviously not very identifiable. All of my diving has been in the Pacific, Hawaii, Guam, Palau, Thailand and USMI. However, when I was in Hong Kong in 1972 for the first time I had tattoos placed in a certain place. They are a pair of ship's propellers and over them reads Twin Screws; Keep Clear. I'm also a retired Commander. So I'm thinking CDR Twin Screws. What do you think?

Thanks/Jim

Hi Jim...WOW you found us in 2004 when we first started...and now refinding us again! First off THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!! We are grateful for your sacrafices and service to our country. Secondly we are thrilled you may desire to join us diving... you should look at our Maldives trip and Lembeh trip after it since you like that part of the world. (Who doesn't right?)

And third...we are a very informal group so you'll always be an 'active' commander here so why not go with Cmdr Twin Screws or even Twin Screws? We could use the more formal version and obviously more correct version you suggest of CDR Twin Screws if you can't quite let go with the other options.

Its great to have you and we REALLY appreciate your support of our community via your premier membership too!

While we are heavily focused on WHERE to go diving for the next couple of years...we still have a couple of great trips still on the books for this year and early next. Check the link in my signature line for what's coming up! :cool1:

p.s. We are very old fashioned and keep your last name, email etc private. So that is why they have been removed from your posts. :thankyou:

Hi WW, Thanks for keeping me safe watching my posts. I like Twin Screws, like you said, keep it informal.

I will be watching info for upcoming trips to the green belt. Sulawesi is on my list, but Raja Impat sounds just as good... maybe less visited.

Gotcha six... since I'm an AF brat...not sure what you say when you are Navy! ;)

I'll get it changed for you... have you dove Maldives or Lembeh? The latter is the poor man's Raja Ampat area!

Hi WW, I choose Kimbuddha because it was a pet name my great grandfather called me. Obviously it has nothing to do with scuba. I started diving in Mexico in the 70's and then yearly on vacations. I was certified in the Cayman Islands and later increased to rescue diver while volunteering in Fiji. Basically helped scientists do surveys for 6 weeks at a time while living on a small island with only a generator and huts. It was great. So maybe "IslandDiver" island girl? I could live on a deserted island "away from the things of man" I've also been diving in Roatan,Maui, Dominican Republic, bahamas(shark), mexico(everywhere+cenotes). Any thoughts? Please change if you like any of the above or have suggestion. My parents were both police officers and my grandfather was the local "bookie" in the neighborhood. Nicknamed "Tango" I also have 4lb maltese named FIDO, means faithful or I am faithful. I think I like "islanddiver" the best if its available.

Hi Kimberly and :welcome: aboard! Our fearless leader Kamala is leading (naturally) our latest trip in the magnificent Maldives and as a consequence is off the grid including Internet for a couple of weeks. Your current Screen Name is terrific! It meets our recommendations for privacy and has a special meaning to you which makes for a great ice breaker topic. :cool1: Unfortunately both "Island Girl" and "IslandDiver" (including several permutations of each) are already in use by other members; our database boasts over 7,000 and, as you have demonstrated, continues to grow! :cool2: So with this is mind, unless you feel strongly about changing your Screen Name I recommend keeping "Kimbuddha" just as you have it now. (However if you really DO wish a different Screen Name just reply here in this topic and I can help you research available names you may like.) :angel2:

Thanks also for such an interesting and personable introduction, we are sure you will find yourself at home in our community of gregarious dive enthusiasts! :diver: You may wish to consider using the same paragraph in a fresh introductory topic here in this same New Member Introduction Forum at your convenience. Again, welcome and we look forward to seeing you on one of Kamala's great upcoming trips!

I think Kimbuddha is perfect!!! Makes me regret not being sharp enough to figure out Timbuddha!!! :respect:/>/>

That said, my screen name fits (as WW & anyone else who has met me, so far, will testify).

Cheers!

I on the other hand am a perfect example of what not to do in a screen name.

If I could do it again I'd be scubabeagle.

I'd also like to remember to introduce myself to new people as gwyndolynne but alas I forget and I am just plain...
