Q. What % of divers when doing a gas switch (meaning they are diving more than just air or nitrox) incorrectly make that switch?

A. Extensive testing has shown that when pushing buttons underwater divers do it incorrectly 33 to 35% of the time and this is when there is zero stress involved. Gas switching is a significant load factor even when it is not involved in a bailout.

Q. Is there a way to ensure that a diver makes their gas switch 100% accurately all the time?

A. Yes there is one computer on the market that switches your gas mix for you automatically when you reach the pre-programmed depth. You ONLY have to remember to actually swap the reg from your current breathing gas to the gas you wish to breath next. Its that simple BECAUSE the computer will automatically switch the gas mix for you in the computer. And that computer is a Cochran EMC16 or EMC20h. In fact, Cochran owns the patent for all methods of gas switching underwater. The reason Cochran chooses to switch gases the way that we do is because of the error rates listed above.

Q. Worried what to do if you do not have the gas mix to switch to that you planned and programmed into your computer?

A. Simply don't make the preprogrammed stop. Let me explain. A common gas switch is to go from either air or nitrox to a high mix of 02 to eliminate the decompression obligation you may have in about half the time thru the use of the high 02 gas mix. A common gas swap is to go from your starting mix to say 100% 02 at 20 ft. If for some reason you no longer have the 100% 02 when its time to reach 20 ft then stay at 21ft or deeper so that your computer still knows you are using your back gas and will then give you accurate deco info/time to off gas using the mix you still have. Then when your obligation is complete you can safely ascend to the surface even though you lost your 100% 02.

I love my Cochran. I've never had a problem with it that I didn't cause! I have exactly 200 dives on it since it was last upgraded and probably 50-60 before that.

Each wreck has a tale to tell about its life and its demise.

If you are observant while diving in dark places listen to the account each has to tell, You cannot come away unaffected.
