For those of you who were on the Roatan trip may have heard I lost my backup computer on the LAST day of diving,11/1.I was handing up my camera, after de attaching it from my d ring.I had not realized that I also realeased my back up computer. When the boat mate alerted me of it,I had already taken off my fins and was at 400 psi.and was already 10 ' ahead of me.The current was a little strong on that day.Needless to say I had to make a life decision and let it go.That same minute John had also realized his mask had fallen off. There was another witness to this .Who I'm not mentioning.

My point! I had taken out a policy with Senn Dunn H20. Explained the event.Claim denied.Needed a police report in the event of a loss through the airline or another like event .The policy reads it will cover/replace damaged equipment,(not repairable).I tried assuring them I was not trying to scam them. All they said was they had been getting people making claims on equipment they did not even own.I pointed out to them they had the serial # & date of purchase.Needless to say I was disappointed with their attitude. And by the way, they don't refund your $ if you want to cancel the policy..
I am sounding the alert for those of you considering such business with them..

Greg can you post the full company name and ALL their contact info?

Also do they cover lost equipment such as losing it in the ocean or only to theft? And if they do cover lost equipment in the ocean were you supposed to file a police report on that as well?

Kinda,
Dan sponsors them or directs you to that co.Dan,isn't directly involved with that (type) of insurance.

Thank you for the clarification. Buyer beware... READ carefully any policy you buy and be sure to call and ask questions. If you think your gear will be stolen GET A POLICE REPORT if it was. Otherwise you can not claim it even if it was stolen. If it breaks you may be ok but if you worry you'll lose it then forget insurance covering it. :(

Claim denied.

About one year ago I had a similar experience with a camera lost while diving. I didn't bother to pay the renewal.

I am VERY familiar with Dive Assure and have had EXCELLENT luck/success with them. I recommend them VERY Strongly after watching both Dive Assure and Dan handle a similar claim. And while I personally carry both policies I would use DiveAssure first! I have not used their equipment insurance and do not know if they insure it directly or use another company. Let me know your findings... :thankyou:

The current status of my Insurance claim. To be fair to Allianz ( the Insurer) of the policy. They had called me earlier in the week and refunded my Premium I had pd in full.I had just renewed it prior to going on the Roatan trip.So I'm now on the hunt to find another Insurance Co. to replace it.I now have a list of questions to ask before I sign the dotted line..
In addition to investigating a cost as a rider from the Homeowners Ins.Which interestingly, they separated the Camera equipment from the general equipment. It is charged at a different rate.I'm sure every co. does things different ,I guess. .I'll look into DEPP.From what I'm reading they have a good reputation. Not sure if I need to join Dive assure 1st to get DEPP...?

I know awhile back I thought this subject was discussed.I'm open to hearing any suggestions..other than DAN...

One of the reasons I've never bothered with equipment insurance is the "in use"/"in care or custody of" and "swept away" clauses. To me, that means just about anything that happens except for the equipment being stolen in transit, will not be covered. And, it is much more likely (as evinced by the loss of a dive computer, brand new fins and mask, etc etc etc), that my gear will be "lost" one way or another, either through my negligence or someone else's, but technically while "in use" and/or *my* "care" or "custody."

Will be curious to hear alternatives.

Experience is the best reference...I have never bought equipment insurance because if you put the policy amt into a savings account each year if you lose something you can basically pay for it from the policy savings.

I am glad that the other company gave you your premium back and I spoke to Divers Alert Network about haing better disclosure of what is covered and what is not. They said they would send that feedback to the carrier. Dan Orr also said to tell you that you are not blackballed! LOL!

I too would like to know what you find out from Depp... and if I can slow down a bit I'll try to get more info on my own. It is certainly something we need to be able to answer to members.

Thank you Greg... keep us posted on what you find out. kamala
