I'll go along for the ride, Kamala. This has been a rough year for me, physically. After hiking 6 days a week for over 5 years & losing 44 pounds, I've had a few setbacks in 2012. Started the year off with pneumonia. Then, the worst allergies I've ever experienced. Over the summer, I had 3 procedures done to remove some planter's warts from one of my feet. Since, every time I start to get back into a routine, I've sustained injuries. I've had 4 total knee reconstructions, over the years. They aren't recovering as well as they used to. Plus, in recent months, I've suffered an on-going lower back injury that just won't seem to heal. I've decided to rest until FULLY recovered. I've actually had to consider starting a whole new routine. Something lower impact. It's difficult, however, with work & kids' schedules to find time to go work out someplace. I live right on the mountain preserve & that is what I prefer. It makes the most sense, time-wise, also. When my routine was in full swing, getting up at 4AM to go hiking wasn't ever an issue. Now, the body calls for rest. All I can do is listen. It's frustrating, to say the least. My diet is pretty good, for the most part, though I'm far from being a vegetarian. Without the consistent calorie burn, however, it's been a losing battle, this year.

So, anyway, I'm in!

Tim...as a diving family and friends...we are in this together! Its hard but its vital too! Look online for a beginner's level of yoga...very low impact and will help your core as well as help build lean body mass.

REMEMBER the #1 reason to exercise is not to burn calories but to modulate what you put into your mouth when eating. The body will start to CRAVE better food when you are exercising and it generally feels so bad after not having done it for a long time that we think twice about what we eat. THAT is the turning point for most...

Welcome to the challenge...we'll face it together! :respect:

Hey, WW,

I gave yoga up a number of years ago for personal reasons. Another topic for that long conversation we'll be having in San Sal! :teeth:/>

For me, the #1 reason to exercise is to keep my head screwed on straight, as well as getting in a good sweat. I also like being outside, whether in the dark or the light. I like the rhythm, as well as the critters. I don't obsess too much about caloric intake or burn. I eat well & don't go off the rails too often.

Pre-divorce, I also had access to a steam room in my house, along with a hot tub to help soothe sore muscles. Both of those are gone, now. So, looking for new places to access these kinds of services.

After many years of maintaining a strict regimen, this year has forced me to slow down a bit & listen to my body more. I probably should have set more time aside for recovery, in retrospect. Now, I have no choice. Oh, well.....

2013 will bring renewed focus on getting things back on track!

Listening to our body is vital...and we often ignore it for all sorts of reasons so slowing down is the ticket to let it heal.

Sounds like we'll have some good talks in San Sal and a small group so plenty of 'talk time'. :cool1:

Have not gotten back totally into the swing of a regular exercise program but have cut out all snacking except for a handful of pretzels last night. Went a couple of days with a very low calorie intake so need to get my calories up again so my body does not learn to be efficient on the reduced calorie intake.

TIP: Try to have fiber/fresh veggies or fruits as part of every meal. The fiber slows the sugar absorption so the body converts sugars to glocogen aka energy and does not store it as simple fat. Fiber also helps to clear toxins out of your system and keeps us feeling fuller longer.

Count me in for a challenge! Posted Image

I'm continually working at improving my nutrition, but I've made good progress cutting out white starches and sugar (except for the last dive trip!). As for my exercise, I am weightlifting and trying to get in more weight-bearing things like running. I have learned through the years that yoga and running races (even half marathons) were not enough for me to look and feel fit. Once I started working to gain strength by doing squats, deadlifts, presses, core work, etc. I felt much better and in shape. I agree that the real goal is not weight loss but FAT loss...so preserving and gaining muscle has been a real shift of mindset for me. You can't do it without a scale that measures bodyfat, and a cheap caliper is a great tool also for tracking progress.
I ate vegetarian for years but am now eating more protein and fewer carbs. I follow the advice of Precision Nutrition (I am not selling for them, and it is similar to paleo I guess, but less rigid.) The basic idea is saving those starchy carbs for post-workout and loading up with veggies and some fruit. They have a great graphic on their site for how to fill your plate in a healthy way. They also emphasize healthy fats like fish oil and olive oil.

Anyhow, my goals for this challenge are to improve my triglyceride numbers (high tri's run in my family) by watching those carbs (also includes limiting alcohol, which can contribute), consistently taking my fish oil, and working out at least four days per week.

Hey Kamala,

I want to join you and others in the event. I have stress weight as well that I would like to get rid of in the belly. But, truly over all would like to get fit. Today is Saturday, I guess you could say I will eat moderatly, for I am having a party at my house tonight. So, I want eat junk food per say, but I will eat within reason. Come Monday I am hitting the gym. I got to get a scheudle going.

That's the right idea... get going NOW vs after the new year! Every calorie saved aka not eaten or burned will be one less you have to deal with after the new year. AND if we get some GOOD habits going NOW...we'll be less tempted at the various parties and celebrations we'll be partaking of!

Having FINALLY gotten a few more pounds off I feel good again and THAT feeling is almost enough to keep me from snacking too much and overeating.

And putting myself out there with you all is giving me the inspiration to do better! :cool1:

P.S. We'll open some private forums for use by members but the open forum will be for inspiring people to JOIN US!!! :wakawaka:/>

TIP: Drink plenty of water (yeah yeah we all know this one) but the trick is to drink it BETWEEN MEALS so that your body absorbs it and helps you ward off dehdration. Did you know that 85% of the time the body interprets 'thirst' as 'hunger' and we eat when we should be drinking water or herbal/green tea. YES it has to be water or herbal/green tea...just like when we are diving otherwise it is not a 'hydrating' fluid and it will not properly hydrate the body hence the confusion our body has as to whether it is hungry or thirsty.

Between 2006 and 2008 I lost a significant amount of weight through proper diet and exercise. Good habits though seem to be much easier to break than bad ones and I've been in a yo-yo cycle for the last several years. This summer and fall I've fallen completely off the wagon and gained back way more than I'd be willing to admit. The fear of the negative health affects I'm likely to face at some point in the future hasn't seemed to override the desire for the immediate gratification associated with eating sweets and other foods and thus the fork and spoon continue to find their way to the mouth. :banghead:

Momentum has always been key for me...if I get going in the right direction and start seeing positive results, it's much easier to make good decisions with my diet and exercise and stay consistent with it. I've been in need of a spark to light a fire under my butt to get it off the couch and back into the gym. When I showed up at the GA Dive Show last Saturday to help out Kamala at her booth, I hadn't even considered going on the Maldives trip. My diving plans for 2013 were focused on the Dominica trip in May. As Kamala was pitching the Maldives trip to others, I realized that for the first time I had the financial resources to consider an exotic trip outside the N. America and Caribbean region without going into debt (proof that living by a budget within one's means can actually yield great dividends but that is a different topic) and the timing in late February was great for my work schedule. Then Kamala said to me, "we'll be doing Dominica every year"! I had found my spark...the immediate prospect of facing thirty hours of flying time to the Maldives in coach class less than three months away! So yeah, I'm in... :thankyou:
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. (Mark Twain)

A note on instant gratification....

1. Come up with a list of instant gratifiers that do not involve food or high caloric beverage.
2. When you need instant gratification choose one of the above.
3. If you must use food as an instant gratifier make sure you are not overly hungry or skipped a meal or bored or tired etc. If you are using food to stay awake, relieve stress, etc then these are different issues we'll talk about. If you are using food to reward yourself for getting a difficult task done or to celebrate THEN go to the list in #1 and choose one of these instead. Even if you only are successful 50% of the time you are 50% ahead of the game.
4. Be aware that most junk food has additives that cause you to CRAVE more junk food so making it nearly impossible to exert proper self control when you want/need a pick me up or to feel better etc.

Stay tuned for more tips on how to beat the cravings...how to help ease the stress eating blues and more.

I will join as well. I definitely need the motivation. Eating better is the big thing with me. I need to drop some weight, and exercise is not much of an option other than some light bike riding. What I could use some assistance with is finding a balance where I am eating healthy, but do not have a problem with low blood sugar. I have often tried cereal for breakfast, a light lunch, and a large salad for dinner, and little else. I do lose a bit of weight that way, but it is very slow. The only issue is that I sometimes have the blood sugar issues when I try that kind of diet. Unfortunately, I love meat and potatoes, and am not a fish eater. I also have a weakness for junk food.
