Gerry please do keep us apprised. We are caring cyber family here and the time people have taken to post shows that. And WE all care what happens to you. And perhaps someone else will learn from what you've gone thru.

I will keep you informed. Dentist tomorrow morning. ENT doc today, forget what for. He saw me before Neuro and ordered the MRI, so he must know something.

Thanks again, and hope you're right, John.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain. If you have trigeminal neuralgia, even mild stimulation of your face — such as from brushing your teeth or putting on makeup — may trigger a jolt of excruciating pain.

You may initially experience short, mild attacks, but trigeminal neuralgia can progress, causing longer, more frequent bouts of searing pain. Trigeminal neuralgia affects women more often than men, and it's more likely to occur in people who are older than 50.

Because of the variety of treatment options available, having trigeminal neuralgia doesn't necessarily mean you're doomed to a life of pain. Doctors usually can effectively manage trigeminal neuralgia with medications, injections or surgery.

I would agree to see a dentist for any tooth nerve problems, or to see if there my be a tooth fracture (can be very painful). For piece of mind, try your gear in a pool or lake, where you could immediately surface and receive care if needed. I believe these suggestions should be tried before you retire, and if you don't retire, Kamala will buy you an ice tea on your next trip! :-)

Only on SingleDivers can Kamala's prayers that someone needs a root canal be seen as endearing. Hopefully that turns out to be the case, and you are back in the water, comfortably, and soon.

Dentist today found an abscessed tooth (#18) so we'll get that yanked out on Monday. Neuro is weaning me off Carbamzepine since it doesn't appear to be working. Nothing new to try yet. Antibiotics for the tooth, Vicodan for the pain, (which was SPECIAL pain yesterday...)Fitted for night guard today for grinding. Guess we'll see after tooth extraction what kind of pain is left in face, and go from there. Feels better DOING something instead of just sitting around waiting for something to happen. Plus I hear Vicodan is much better that Ativan....

Thanks everyone.

Gerry

Had abscessed tooth pulled yesterday by the Head of Oral Surgery at Wilmington Hospital. Why he did it instead of one of his residents is beyond me, perhaps because of the Trigeminal Neurolgia twist, or maybe he wanted to brush up on the basics. Incredible staff there BTW. Only pain is where tooth was pulled, and minimal at that. Doc said it def needed to come out. Guardly optimistic that this has been a dental problem and not neuro problem. All the dentists say dental, neurologist still scratching his head. Guess only time will tell. Since I usually only dive every other year, have awhile to convince myself that the pain isn't coming back.

Thanks again for all the good info provided here by SD Dentists, and well wishes.

Hope to join you all again for trip in 2015.....

Gerry

Gerry that is INDEED good news! And I am soooooooooooooooooooo glad you got good information here as well as HOPE that your diving career is not over! (You are too young anyway!) LOL! ;)

So keep us apprised...I know I speak for everyone following this saga that we HOPE/PRAY/WISH that it was your tooth and you'll be just fine!

Tell the neuro to keep scratching his head AND he should learn to scubadive too!

BTW...I only use diving docs and dentists unless its life and death. But in my case...it could be if I don't have medical people who are also divers!
