What is "rent a buddy?" I thought that by going on this trip, we'd automatically be/have a buddy?

There are really two different types of buddies on SD trips.  There are normal buddies like you would have on any trip.  Those are matched to your experience level and you get those for free.  New divers sometimes want more though so for an extra cost you can be matched with a professional for some dives and they will give you much more attention/help than a regular buddy would.  That would be a Rent-a-Buddy.  Its a bit of a misnomer but is a good deal for very new divers.

Thanks Scott, great reply!! The name has evolved to either Rent-A-Buddy if you just want a dive pro to 'watch you' and make sure nothing happens to you. Or Rent-A-Mentor if you want a dive pro to 'help dial in anything you are wanting help with...trim, buoyancy, air management, etc.   Technically they are the same program but just a different focus. And that is why there is a charge for it.

As Scott said when you sign up for a trip we have a very detailed diving survey that we use to help pair you with a dive buddy suggestion. And even after we make suggested buddies we 'fine tune' them in the water to see if they work or not in reality vs just looking good 'on paper'. So in the end you will have a wonderful buddy!

Hello Katie, and welcome to a wonderful group.  Although your question has most likely been answered, I will say it in a different way.  All new divers go through stages of growth in their diving, as well as their comfort level in the water.  I do not recall meeting a new diver that did not want to continue diving with their instructor early on.  They had a level of comfort that they got from the instructor during class as well as during the check out dives.  As Scott mentioned, the " Rent A Buddy " program matches you with a professional diver.  It gives you the comfort you would have if your instructor was on the trip and diving with you.  I have seen many divers select the program and have their diving skills grow significantly during their first trip.  As your skills grow, your confidence and comfort in the water grow.  With that growth, your enjoyment of diving will greatly increase.

Another thing to note is that the ideal buddy that you are taught to be in the OW class is rarely the buddy you get on a trip.  Most buddies consider themselves to be there for emergencies only, IF THAT, and they are on their vacation also.  Kamala does a good job matching buddies but you can't expect them to be the ideal buddy the instructors teach about.  Doing a Rent-a-Buddy on your first trip can be invaluable for learning the ropes of how a real trip works without the shock of learning everything they didn't tell you all at one time.  I did it, in Roatan, 12yrs ago and would do it again.

Ok, thank you everyone!

Kamala, I'd like to sign up for Rent-a-Buddy! Can I just make that notice here? And then let me know how I can pay. Thank you!

Hello from Cozumel... you can actually add the Rent-A-Buddy NOW via our shopping cart system. You can do for 1 day or the week. And we will ask you what you want to focus on during the rent a buddy and rent a mentor program!

Awesome! Kamala

Hey Kamala,

I am seriously thinking about filling that last open spot, how has it been negotiating COVID testing requirements for arrival and departure purposes? I'm doing the flight searching right now but I dread getting to the day of the flight...."oh your test results aren't ready yet!" I'm understanding most places have a 72 hour test to result window. Any thoughts or experience on this?

I"m sorry for the delay in replying to this. I was leading our Jan Cozumel trip and could not keep up with all the forum questions as well as emails and ensure 22 people were 100% happy! ;)  I did manage the last one for sure so NOW playing catch up! LOL

Testing really depends on where you live. Some places can get you PCR results by midnight the same day so you can test 3 days before the flight time OF YOUR FIRST LEG and get results that night and then still fill out the govt online info they way including a copy of your negative test and still have the max amount of buffer if the test is late.

But not all cities/towns/locales are like that.

Also let me see if they will accept antigen to enter. If that is the case then its easy to make the testing. Stand by...

Check with CVS.  They have a rapid PCR test that they claim is back within hours.  Their website shows several in your area.
