Hello everyone,

I am going to Japan for work in June and I'd like to tack on a few days after I finish working on the 17th to dive. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for location, dive companies, logistics, etc. I am solo, AOW with about 100 total dives.

I can probably do up to four diving days before I need to get back stateside, and I'll be working in and around Yokosuka mostly. Due to the nature of my plane bookings I will almost certainly have to fly home out of Tokyo, so closer to there is better, although I understand Okinawa is good.

Thanks!

David

David I was stationed at Misawa AB at the north tip of Honshu (the big island, with Tokyo, Mt. Fuji etc.) and I can confirm the water is far too cold for recreational diving there. Okinawa on the other hand is sub tropical with lots of vibrant reefs and sea life. Hopefully your "Japan" assignment will be on Oki, if not it is only an hour and change flight from Honshu. :diver:

Thanks for that tip. My assignment will definitely not be in Okinawa, but the prevailing wisdom seems to be that I should make the effort to travel there. Any recommendations on Okinawa?

Personally no. I was close to a DoD teacher stationed in Oki to be close to her son and his family, but we broke up before they all rotated back Stateside late last year and all our dives were in South Florida while she was on vacation.

I can tell you from her photos and stories the reefs are lush and shore diving is relatively easy at several locations. Perhaps other members who have dived there will chime in. Good luck!
