Hi WreckWench,
You and I had discussed Flax Seed for a good potassium supplement. I have done some looking and have only found Flax Seed oil. How would I go about getting the supplement that you mentioned?
Also, do you grind it yourself, or does it come pre-ground. Please let me know when you have a chance.

Thanks for the help, you are a GREAT resource for nutritional information!!!!!!

Hi ZenKim,

I know your post is specifically directed at WW but she and I also had this conversation so I thought I could fill you in a bit on what she told me.

Grind it yourself. The seed can last quite a long time when it's whole but as soon as you grind it, it starts to break down and lose it's nutritional value. If you can, grind it and use it immediately. Doing that doesn't work very well for me so what I do is grind up several days worth and put it in the freezer right away. That will at least slow down the "break down" stage. I usually do enough to last almost a week.

I found flaxseed at several health and nutrition stores but also at the grocery store. Many grocery stores here are jumping onto the health food bandwagon so it's easy to get a good variety of items at the grocery store that only a few years ago were exclusive to the healthfood scene.

I'm WW will expand on what I've said and provide you will some great advice.

Hi ZenKim and DiverLady,

FlaxSEED in its whole form is the BEST food source for Omega 3 EFA's. (Essential Fatty Acids, called essential because your body can not make them...they have to be derived from the food we eat.) After flaxseed, the next best sources of Omega 3's are fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, then pecans. You have to eat them EVERYDAY in order to meet the brain and body's needs for these Essential Fatty Acids. PLUS when you eat the flaxseed you'll also get most of the soluable fiber you need daily whose role is to swell up in your body absorbing toxins as well as helping you to feel full, all the B vitamins, a very bioavailable source of calcium, 10 different amino acids and a host of vital trace minerals that our bodies need!

Flaxseeds are superior to flaxseed oil unless the oil is specifically prescribed for you to increase the omega 3's in your diet. The oils only contain Omega 3's and not fiber, B vitamins, amino acids, minerals etc. They sometimes have lignans in them that are contained in Flaxseed, but they often settle to the bottom of the oil and are never consumed. The oil will start to go rancid immediately which is why it is sold in a dark, small bottle and you are told to refrigerator it at all times. And the oil costs about 5x more then the seed so I prefer the seeds.

As for grinding...it is preferred to grind it daily vs. weekly...even if you freeze it. Flaxseed is as fragile as cut up apples. You might eat one you cut up in the morning...but not a week later. The drawback to flax is that you can't see the oxidation that has occurred.

And for where to buy flaxseed, DiverLady is right...flaxseed is starting to show up many places as people realize how important it is to the diet. There are two types of flaxseed...golden and dark. Golden is a hybred that has been developed to contain more of the Omega 3's in them. The dark seed is a commercial crop grown to produce linseed oil and linen clothing etc. It was not designed for food consumption however due to flaxseed's popularity, it is offered for sale anyway. You can find flaxseed in health food stores bulk bins. I usually stay away from them as I'm never sure where the seeds have been and depending on the bin type...I don't know who has sneezed around them, coughed, etc. You also want to AVOID flaxseed ALREADY GROUND up as it will usually have more of the flaxseed husk ground up in it then actual flaxseed. Also as soon as you open the package the flaxseeds will start to go rancid assuming that they were ground and packaged in a vacuum in the first place.

So to answer your question...yes I do know a very good, clean source of Flaxseed that comes direct from the farmer in North Dakota and has never been touched by human hands and is reasonable in price. A quart sells for $16 which will last you a month taking 2-4 T a day or you can buy a gallon for $45 which will last you for 4 months. This is the product that I personally use and many people have told me that they love the taste much better then any other flax that they have tried. (This is also the flax that Narwhal aka Jim is using in his "kick me in the butt" diet regime he had me start him on after the Cozy trip. And for the record...he is at 13 pounds weight loss on a program which does not use calorie restriction but rather proper food selection.)

If you are interested in how to order the brand I use, please pm me and I'll send you the information on it. I hope this answered some of your questions. Please feel free to ask more! ww

I can truly agree with what Wreck Wench has said on Flax Seed, I got some from her last week and it's great, however I have skipped a few times here and there because it's difficult sometimes if I'm running late in the morning to grind it, but I love the taste of it and it seems to fill me right up so I'm not quite as hungry in the mornings or evenings. Then if I do snack I usually have some fruit..

Dejah, I'm thrilled you are using flaxseed as part of your health and wellness regime! Flaxseed also has many anti-viral and anti-biotic properties so it helps to strengthen your immune functions as well!

Once you get into the 'flax habit'....you'll really miss it when you forget or don't have time to do your flax juice. (The easiest way to consume your flax is to mix it in a glass of juice however you can sprinkle it once you've ground it on food or salads for extra crunch but personally I just drink it myself!)

Keep us posted on your results!

Ok so I will be the naysayer and maybe WW can add some light to this since this is what she does for a living. But I recently read an article in a health magazine that slammed Flax seed and Soy as saying there are no real proven benefits and that there can actually be some problems associated with taking these on a regular basis?

Note: There has been research done that has conflicting views about the benefits of flaxseed...however the research in question was done with the oils (once exposed to air they are oxidized which means that they are now rancid) and not the seed. The seed form protects the vital omega 3 EFA's (essential fatty acids) until you are ready to consume them hence the reason you grind them fresh before eating them.
Follow your bliss, just don't follow it too closely in case it stops suddenly!

Good point, VaScubaGirl.

I've read that men who already have prostate cancer shouldn't take flaxseed but just the flaxoil instead.

I don't have any more info than that. Maybe WW can elaborate.

I don't know anything about flax seed, but I do know the omega three fatty acids reduce cholesterol and help lower the risk of heart attack.

Great!!! The only drawback to most cereals is that the seeds are not ground which means you are hoping for the teeth to do the grinding for you to release the nutrition! Some of us chew better then others!!! LOL!!! :D I hope you are one of them!!! :)

Hi group!! I thought I'd put my two cents in. WW has had me on the Juice Plus and flax seed since we returned from Cozumel. I have lost sixteen pounds and I feel much better. The flax seed certainly does keep you regular!!!!! It also seems to have helped with my sleep cycle. I have been off the flax seed twice and returned to the restless sleep pattern I had before starting it. When I got back on it, my sleep cycle and ability to sleep all night seemed to have straightened itself out. I realize that this is anecdotal evidence, but, it seems to work for me. :cool2:

Hey Narwhal...you are doing WONDERFUL!

And I know for a fact that the weight loss is permanent as well as gradual cuz I've seen you still eating as you used to however you are incorporating SOME lifestyle changes such as the addition of good food to your diet like the flaxseed as well as making some healthier dinner selection choices such as baked vs. fried etc.

Way to go...I feel as if you'll continue to lose and if you continue to make good subtle but important lifestyle changes that you'll keep the weight off as well! :2cool:

A big contributing factor is the reduction of some of the animal meat you've been eating and the increase in steamed or raw veggies I've noticed you starting to make!! YEA!!!! The substitution of complex carbs such as veggies not only gives you energy but it also gives you fiber, anti-oxidants and the necessary enzymes for your body to digest the meat and simple carbs you are eating as well!

Aren't veggies wonderful!!! :cool2:

As for sleeping better...yes flaxseed helps with that tremendously. You will sleep more soundly...more rested...and in more even sleep cycles which contributes to a more rested feel even on less hours.

Reviving very old thread.

I started using flax seed after reading this thread several months ago. I will say I have more energy and don't have as much trouble sleeping. Would highly recommend adding to your daily intake.
