Where is the Sea of Cortez and Socorro Island and what makes them so special?

Fall brings almost limitless visibility and calm seas, making it prime time for both scuba diving and snorkeling in the Sea of Cortez, where many species of sub-tropical fish thrive in ideal conditions and relative isolation. This is where giant manta rays glide, hammerhead sharks school, and California sea lions play. There's also a good chance of seeing gigantic, gentle whale sharks. Some locations have so many moray eels that the sites are nicknamed "moray condos"! Abundant plant and marine life, including sea stars, sponges, molluscs, nudibranchs, and anemones, make these warm, clear waters a colourful, dazzling dive perfect for new and advanced divers alike.

Whether you're diving, kayaking, or relaxing on the deck of the Nautilus Explorer we'll be on the lookout for humpback, fin, sei, minke, and perhaps even blue whales (the largest creatures on Earth). A large population of rarely-seen sperm whales lives 50 miles offshore in the middle of the Sea of Cortez year round and yes, weather permitting, it is possible to get in the water with them. Transfers to and from Magdalena Bay and an unforgettable panga (skiff) ride that brings you thrillingly close to adult and baby grey whales are easily arranged.
From November through April, we also offer trips to the volcanic islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago, 200 miles south of Baja's tip. Known as the Mexican Galapagos, these remote islands remain largely untouched by man. Socorro Island, the largest, is a pristine paradise for adventurous divers. Here you can ride the slipstream of the giant Pacific Mantas (but no touching them) and dive with whitetip, Galapagos, tiger, hammerhead and whale sharks, as well as dolphins. With plentiful tuna, billfish and Wahoo, fishing is also fabulous.
Trips depart from La Paz and Cabo San Lucas with night transits to wherever the best visibility and calmest seas await you.

What we'll see and a typical agenda for a Sea of Cortez Trip only and and a Socorro Island Trip only...WE HAVE A COMBO TRIP SO WILL ENJOY THE BEST OF BOTH!!! (Final agenda set by the boat.) :

Sea of Cortez Adventures

Fall is peak season in the Sea of Cortez and late September through early November are the best times to visit. The diving here is like swimming in a giant aquarium with bath temperature water. The sheer number and diversity of fish seen is simply stunning. You can expect relatively calm seas and the weather is generally hot and sunny. Surface temperatures range from well over 100 degrees in September to the mid eighties in November. Water temps vary from 86 to 76 degrees and skins or 3 mil wetsuits are very popular. The chance of a tropical storm in the early part of the season is possible but remote and the odd day might be either overcast or rainy.

Divers will see loads of moray eels (it's not uncommon to see 20 to 30 Panamic green morays on certain dives), California sealions enjoying the warm water, dolphins, turtles and a profusion of fish including pufferfish, cornetfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, porkfish, parrotfish, angelfish, cabrilla, jacks, butterflyfish, wrasses, damselfish, goatfish and barberfish just to name the most common. Garden eels grow to amazing sizes down here and have to be seen to be believed. Seahorses, jawfish and lobster can also be seen by the observant diver. Hammerhead shark sightings are variable and we have gone for a couple of weeks without seeing any animals and then seen schools of 30 - 100 sharks within a couple of days. Whale sharks are present but quite difficult to locate unless the seas are absolutely calm. Invertebrate life is moderate in places and includes stony corals, seafans, gorgonians and yellow colonial tubastrea corals. The topography can be fantastic with seamounts, submarine canyons and small caves.

We believe that our Sea of Cortez trips can best be described as extremely relaxing warm water diving with a dash of challenge suitable for divers of virtually all skill levels. Sometime in late November or early December winter outflow winds from the Colorado River basin will start blowing for 3 - 5 day stretches which is when it's time for us to move on to our Socorro Island adventures.

Sample itinerary FOR SEA OF CORTEZ ONLY

Day 1: Late afternoon or evening departure from La Paz once we have
picked up all our incoming guests.

Days 2 - 6: Opportunity for 4 dives per day including night dives with
inwater divemastering and critter spotting available. The best
diving is generally considered to be between San Jose and Isla
Cerralvo. Sites will likely include old favourites like Los
Islotes, Las Animas, El Bajo and the wreck of the Salvatierre as
well as some remote and pristine diving only accessible by
liveaboard diveboat. Of course, we will also be offering a host
of other activities including paddling (lessons and guiding),
shore walks, sailing, marine ID classes, slide shows, show and
tells and just plain relaxing.

Day 7: 2 dives followed by a mid-afternoon arrival in the charming town
of La Paz. Free time on shore with the option of returning to
the boat for dinner as well as a big marguerita send-off party!

Day 8: Breakfast followed by disembarking at 9 a.m.

Socorro Island Adventures (Note since we have the entire boat, the boat will cater to us. Contact me to see if you are ready to make these extraordinary dives!)

Liveaboard diving is not for everybody and Socorro Island is not for the "I want it easy diver". The Revillagigedo archipelago (of which Socorro is one island) is famous for very close and intimate interaction with giant mantas. We're talking "really close" interaction with mantas that can appear out of the blue anywhere in the islands. These are known as the friendliest mantas in the world and we put groups of only 10 - 11 divers in the water at a time to ensure the best possible encounter. Try checking out the following Captain's Log entry!
We cater to more experienced divers on these trips and specialize in looking after photographers, rebreather divers, etc. Our vessel was custom built from the keel up as a very comfortable, safe and easy riding platform. We pride ourselves on offering a high level of personalized service and imaginative and fresh cuisine in an environment where guests feel "aahhh, this is nice". Our handpicked friendly, cheerful and professional crew, a sparkling clear fresh water hot tub, 2 different sun decks with lots of deck chairs, a really comfortable main salon, 30 different microbrews, extensive wine list and a great selection of single malts in the ship's bar as well as blissful quiet during the day all contribute to a wonderful onboard ambience.

When the diving is hot at Socorro, the blue, blue water, manta, shark and big fish sightings are incredible. You will definitely see silky, silver tip, galapagos and white tip reef sharks. You should see solitary and schooling hammerheads. You will see dolphins topside but it's up to the dolphins whether they will interact with you in the water. You have to be lucky to see, tiger and dusky sharks but they are here. Whale sharks are seen in November and December as are humpback whales during the winter and orcas and sealions on ocassion. The diving is not always super hot and shark sightings can be down on some trips, but it's always interesting. Shark diving in the Isla Revillagigedo used to be absolutely outstanding but has been in a slow decline over the last 25 years due to fishing pressure. There was a time when you could expect to see 300 sharks on one dive. The very good news is the islands are now an aggressively protected marine sanctuary and the Mexican government has a navy base on Socorro and a warship on constant patrol in the archipelago. We have been seeing lots of young sharks and are hopeful that this protected population of animals will continue to mature and quickly multiply.

You can always expect to see a myriad of colourful reef fish, jacks, barracuda, spotted trunkfish as well as octopus, turtles and scorpionfish. This area boasted some of the best sportfishing in the world before it became a marine protected area and you may see bonitas, tuna, wahoo and even marlin at places like Roca Partida. Vast numbers of marine birds nest around the islands, giant sea turtles lay their eggs on sandy beaches and sealions cruise through the islands on occassion.

Water temps range from the low '80s in November to mid '70s in February before climbing back up in April. The consolation to lower water temps is that is when the humpback whales and their babies show up! Surface temperatures range from 70 to 85 degrees and it is sunny and beautiful almost all winter long. You should be aware that we will be making a 22 hour open ocean crossing to get there. Sea conditions are usually mild on the southbound downhill leg while the return leg can be rougher if not well timed. Our vessel is equipped with dual Inmarsat satellite transceivers and we monitor the weather forecasts continuously. Generally, the seas only get rough one day before, and two days following, the passage of the ocassional North Pacific weather front that has drifted down the coast. We promise to watch the weather "like a hawk" and time the return trip to best avoid any uncomfortable seas. The Nautilus Explorer is a heavy stabilized steel vessel and has a very smooth ride in a 3 to 4' sea and is still quite comfortable in a 6 to 8' head sea. It is very rare for guests not to find their sea legs after Day 1 or 2 and we supply complimentary electronic motion sickness bands for anybody who might be concerned about seasickness. Drugs (the legal kind!) and alcohol also work really well.

Unfortunately, illegal fishing boats sometimes still sneak into the islands and set up longlines up to 40 miles in length catching hundreds of sharks and mantas at a time that are worth little more than USD100 per animal to the fishermen (most of the value is in the fin). Scientists at the United Nations estimate the DAILY catch of sharks worldwide at 273,000 animals. DAILY!!! Your purchase of a trip on any of the local diveboats here is a positive step to maintaining an aggressive guardianship of the archipelago. To find out more about what is being done to help restore this area to it's original state, check out SEAWATCH.

Sample itinerary Socorro Islands ONLY

Day 1: Afternoon board and optional warmup dive in Cabo San Lucas followed by an overnight run to Benedicto Island.

Day 2: Late afternoon dive on our arrival at Benedicto.

Day 3 - 8: Opportunity for 3 or 4 dives per day at Benedicto and Socorro Islands with inwater divemastering and dive guiding available. Night dives are not generally offered because of predatory shark behaviour after dark. Benedicto Island is known for some of the best diving with giant manta rays anywhere in the world. These animals are up to 21' across and can be very friendly. If the weather cooperates we should be able to spend one or two days diving at Roca Partida (lots of game fish, sharks, etc.). A couple of times each season we will also visit Clarion Island as well. The islands range in size from little more than barren rock pinnacles covered with bird guano to a large desert island covered with vegetation. They are remote, unspoiled and untouched marine wilderness frontiers that present unlimited exploration opportunities for adventuresome divers.

Day 9: One more day of diving at Benedicto Island before getting underway for the overnight steam back to Cabo San Lucas.

Day 10: Afternoon or evening arrival in port. Free time on shore as well as a big marguerita send-off party.

Day 11: Breakfast followed by morning disembarkation.

Important FAQ about water temps, transfers, flights, other trip details etc

Airlines - La Paz & Cabo San Lucas - Recommendations
We highly recommend that our guests fly into Los Cabos Airport. SJD is served by a number of major airlines including American Airlines through DFW, Continental through Houston, America West via Phoenix, Frontier via Denver, Aero Mexico, Mexicana and Alaska Airlines (with gateways at SEA, PDX, SFO, San Jose and LAX). Fares are quite reasonable and connecting flights are very reliable. SJD is a 2 hour 25 minute drive from our berth at La Paz and 30 minutes from our berth in Cabo San Lucas.

Taxes & Port Fees:
Prices include all taxes, with the exception of a USD65 port fee (payable onboard) and optional airport transfers.

Transfers:
We would be very pleased to provide transfers to or from SJD Int'l Airport or hotels in San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas or La Paz on our boarding days. Round trip transfers are USD55 pp. Incoming guests will be met at the airport by our staff and we utilize either a chartered highway coach or fleet of vans (if the arrival times are staggered) to move folks around. We do require that anyone requesting transfers, flies into SJD no later than 2:30 pm. And we recommend that outbound flights are not booked for departures prior to 1 pm.
Cervas y marguerita on the highway coach or vans are definitely part of the deal!! And we are always pleased to provide information on "pre and post" packages, hotel recommendations and reservations, ideas on interesting things to do in Baja California and ground transfers.

If you are staying in a hotel prior to boarding the vessel:
We kindly ask that guests remember to keep their suitcases zipped closed when not in use. We have found that even the nicest hotels have those pesky pests and they would probably love to jump in for a free ride to the Nautilus! Also, please do not bring any corrugated cardboard products onboard.

Water Temperatures in the Sea of Cortez:
Water temperatures range from 86 degrees at the beginning of October to 78 degrees by mid-November. We do not generally operate in the Sea of Cortez past the middle of November. Most guests dive full-length 3mil wetsuits and some of us dive in shorties, skins and / or t-shirts and shorts.

Water Temperatures out at the Revillagigedo Islands:
Water temps at Socorro will be in the high 70's in mid November and can dip down to 70 degrees in the middle of the winter. so a drysuit will work, however a 5 mil wetsuit should be OK and a 7 mil will be good for sure (just a wee bit difficult to get into). Our staff usually wear shorties or skins at the start of the Socorro season. Water temps will start rising again by March.

With a decent week, I can get the deposit check in the mail by Friday - But I have one problem . . .

30 different microbrews, extensive wine list and a great selection of single malts in the ship's bar

I need to check the Bacardi availability on the trip. I can't pack enough for 12 days. :thankyou:

Sweetie,

Since I don't drink, I will have extra room in my suitcase for all the Bacardi and any other rum you want. If you'll bring your music, we will have an awesome trip. I guess that means I'm in but I'll have to work on bribes to get off from work during a holiday week and missing a family function.

Que :2cool:

:2cool: You got it! I'll bring the tunes! Don't worry about the holiday - If anyone complains, just tell them you are giving yourself something to be thankful for!

This sounds very tempting!!!! Get a couple of days of holiday, so not as much vacation time to take.

Can we specially request turkey and all the fixin's on T'day!? And football...we'd need to be able to watch some football that day too! :fish2:
