...LOVE the stroking pink gear!!! :birthday:

Actually it is because of my boys that I too have added pink to my diving gear. In fact it was on the Vortex Springs dive where we came out of one of the man made caves and it was so silted up from the divers in front of us that the only thing I saw next to me was the pink regulator of my youngest son! Prior to that, the boys had been arguing over who gets the pink regulator and the small womans light blue/pink BC from the used equipment that I initially purchased for them. Here I thought that they'd be irked over the color of these items but instead they all wanted their gear in pink. Apparently pink is now the "cool" color for teenage boys in their school. I was initially taken aback by their attitudes about boys/men in pink but then realized that it was my own stereotyping and not theirs!

Besides the obvious visibility improvement, I see that the uniqueness has added to a team unity and awareness with them. These are traits that I do want them to have with diving and with life. So if something as simple as adding a color to ones diving gear results in such an effect, I'm in!

You all are gonna love the pink wings that I am having made for the b/p and wings that have been custom monogrammed for SD. Very understated but very cool!

I'll be posting details soon...

I have 2 kids (monsters) a 16 year old son and an 11 year old daughter. My daughter thinks she is a fish, she spends hours in the pool. She has wanted to get certified since she was 9 and really got mad at me when I told she had to wait until she was older, (I think she has to wait till she is 12 right?). My son says he wants to learn but I am not so sure he really wants to. He wasn't all that thrilled when we went snorkling in HI last summer.

I can't wait untill I can get my daughter certified, she had soooo much fun snorkling in HI. I think she would love scuba.

I think my oldest son will get certified this year. He turned 12 in Sept. I feel Scuba would be best learned young, before your mind starts to tell your body that breathing under water is not right.

AMEN! The first time my family came to Kona, my son was 5. I bought him a set of snorkel gear, and the kid had it on and was doing laps in the condo's pool before I could even "teach" him how to use the stuff.

Getting my kids scuba certified is one of the best things I have done for them. But I also agree with Stef that the surest way of knowing how they will take to it is to get them snorkeling. My boys have been snorkeling since they could walk such that scuba was the next obvious step. In fact, their course started on the day that my youngest turned 10 which is the youngest that kids can get certified. Their certifications are through PADI as I believe that all of the other organizations have a minimum age of 12.

Here's my favorite dive buddy, my daughter Julie (taken in Maui last month):

[Sorry, I don't know how to upload a regular sized image.]

Would you be in the market to adopt a 46 year old son in time for your next trip? :lmao:

That depends. Would you be willing to take care of me in my old age?

I just found this thread and think this is real cool. I have a 10 year old daughter that just got SSI Junior OW certified and it is great. She took to the sport like a natural and is also very safety conciencious (Arghhh). She always double checks everything before she get in the water. As a Jr OW diver she is limited to 40 feet, I believe, but that still great for shallow reef dives. She wants to be a research marine biologist so she can help protect the reefs, I though that was cool. Diving with her is also great because we always go on at least one nice vacation a year to some tropical place and now we both can enjoy the time and have a hobby/sport in common with each other.

I would be very interested in joining a summer trip to AKR. We were planning on going in summer 2007 anyway and why not see if we can get a group of people and get a better deal. My daughter wants to do the week long marine biology camp they offer.

I think an AKR trip would be great..they are VERY kid friendly....booking must be done VERY far in advance especially if it is a large group...we could book for summer of 07
who's leading this parade anyway?

Hmmm, I posted an intro about diving with my boys last night (Forum: Single or Buddyless PARENTS with KIDS, Looking to plan a trip with my teenaged son, Post Preview: #125491) but perhaps it should have been in this topic?

Well I've included a couple of recent pics here. The first one is in Vortex Spring in August 2005 (where my youngest is swamped by his brothers bubbles!), the second one is in the divers bell at Devils Den from December 2005 where my oldest took a picture of his younger brothers and me, and the third is on a charter boat out of Panama City in August 2005 after diving the Black Bart.

Vortex Springs, Devil's Den, Black Bart??? man, we have been to the same spots, I see a potential dive buddy here. What dive shop do you go out of when in Panama City? I use Panama City Dive Shop because the crew on their boats is the best. Former HydroSpace boats, those guys know what service is all about.
Do you go as far west as Destin or Pennsacola? How about Gulf Shores? A couple of weeks ago, I went out of Down Under Dive Shop in Gulf Shores but the boat trip was 1/2 mile out and 20 miles down the coast to Pennsacola but the people were very nice and the boat is excellent. I am going again Aug 6 hopefully to a different spot but out of Down Under again.
Let me know when you hit the area again and if you are looking for a buddy. Oh yea, I should warn you I am really new and tend to think everyone I dive with knows more than me and probably does.

I have two grown children. My daughter has three children, but she has never expressed any interest in diving and the grandchildren are much too young for diving.

My son Mark, now 25, and I first got certified together. We dive as buddies, and also dive with others. My son is extremely fit, rescue certified, and plans to get deco certified soon. He is very handy to have around when diving.

He also plays bass guitar in the Daniel Ferrari Band, which you can learn about here:

http://www.danielferrari.com :)

If Wreck Wench will set up that 2008 Truk trip discussed on another thread, we will probably go on that trip together. :cool2:

I have a almost 13 year old who has been slowly making sure she has been ready to dive. At the age of 8 she joined the PADI Seal Team program at our local dive shop and throughly enjoyed it for almost 2 years. Just keeping the interest until she was ready has been the key.

July 2006 her Grandmas and I (who both dive) took her on her first official dive trip where she decided she was ready for her first ocean dive during a resort course! She is pumped to do it again and certify!! Here she is on her first shore dive in Cozumel 7/2006.

What a great forum, I am a full time single Dad my little girl is 5 this month. As far as diving goes we have a long time before considering even if she wants to dive, but what a great thought sharing the love of diving with her. Well it’s nice to meet all the single parent divers and to know we are not alone.

Hope to catch ya under water
Ky
