With Today's Super Grocery Stores

Who has time to plant a garden.

Well I'm planting a garden this year Again!
Last year I tried a container garden which was empty 5 gal bucks filled with soil and then I planted some tomatoes, radishes, etc... It failed Big Time so it was just another sacrafice of plants to the Sun Gods.

This year is alittle different I have taken a roto tiller to a place in my front yard and tilled up the soil adding leaves that fell over the fall and winter seasons.

My Hope is....

That I will be successful in my efforts in growing myown vegatables!

I hope is never to buy a tomatoe from one of those Super Grocery Stores Again.
sure they look nice up on the grocery selves but when you bite into them they dont taste like anything because most of your store bought produce is picked green and warehoused then ripened buy Gas or some other unnatural method.

That being said...

Who else plants a garden??

I have a water garden!!! 1000 gallon pond and a 30 gallon container pond. The big pond has 12 fish-8 kio, 2 comets and 2 shubunkin. For plants there are 3 lillies. The container pond has a sleeping frog currently, miniture catails and a marginal plant that I can't remember the name.

I will be planting a vegatable garden too, but got snow on the ground right now! ergh!

I usually have a garden too; I've found homegrown tomatoes are the best! and there are some varieties that do really well in containers, some don't!

Gardener here. My whole backyard is a garden - there is an herb, cutting, and water garden inbetween tropicals, lime tree, avocado tree, tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers.

Ok, got a little more time, so here's the scoop:

In So California I had a pretty decent sized garden each year. Giant sunflowers, a couple rows of corn, plenty of crookneck, acorn and zuccini squash, strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers and FLOWERS! I even grew potatoes once.

When I moved to Texas I had to get used to what I could plant and when I could plant it. My first garden failed miserably because the soil was sandy and the sticker burr weeds overtook everything.

My second attempt I took a different route. I made raised beds using shelving from an old house that had been demolished. It had rained that year and my goat pen (yes I had goats) had gotten pretty mucky. I needed to get rid of the muck, so I used it to line the bottom of my raised beds. I mixed the muck with some straw (to hold moisture) and filled the beds about 1/3. then I got some really rich soil from out in the woods under the oak trees where the leaves had turned to mulch and mixed it with some of the sandy soil and filled the beds the rest the way. On top I put more straw to keep in the moisture and protect the seedlings. I planted tomatoes, strawberries, bell peppers and green beans. Tomatoes did the best - in fact, people driving down the street would stop and ask me how I grew such beautiful tomatoes. (My garden was in the front of my house - that's a country thing.) Hey...I attribute it to the goat @!&%! :fish2: The following year I made the mistake of rotating my crop and everything failed miserably.

This year...I have raised beds, but they're under pine so I don't hold much hope since the pine needles tend to kill everything. But I'll attempt some tomatoes anyway.

Well the local wildlife eat my vegatables but atleast I know they are healthy however in survival school they told us to only eat what the wildlife eats, goats not included so why don't the deer eat my herbs? :)

BTW, if anyone wants some Egyption walking onions send me an address, I'm going to be over run with them by summer.

I plant one, but it is a challenging proposition when you live on the beach - lots of things can't take the salt. I mainly do tomatoes, squash, herbs, esp. the latter, as I prefer to only cook with fresh herbs.
Back after a long absence - whew, too busy at work!

I always plant a garden. You just can't beat a garden fresh tomatoe on a grilled cheeseburger, with some fresh corn on the cob. I also happen to be a master gardener so if you all run into problems PM me and I'll help you out. For example.
B2B,
Leaves tend to make the soil acidic very fast when they break down. You might want to invest in a cheap Ph balance test kit and if the soil is below about 6 add some lime to it. Also there are several plant you can put in your garden to help keep away pesky animals.
