Its official...its the New Year and we dove, ate, slept a bit, dove some more and CELEBRATED the New Year while crusing the beautiful and pristine diving of the Grenadines!

Almost everyone arrived a day early so we could ensure we did not miss the boat and to have a chance to relax a bit before starting the trip. We spent the extra day relaxing and sightseeing the island in a wonderful tour that took us to the spice factories, waterfalls, shopping, the rainforest and more.

We boarded our liveaboard and departed the evening of the 27th after getting the last of our divers and luggage from the airport. Our trip started in Grenada where our first day of diving would have been in my favorite place...Isle de Rhone (the next island in the Grenadines) but due to winds we moved to Bequay (spell?) and dove there the first day. As is usual for a first dive day the sites were not as exciting but the wreck we dove was quite nice and FULL OF LIFE. :birthday:

We then headed to St Vincent where the diving picked up and we were able to add some fun land tours to see some of the filming locations of Pirates of the Caribbean! Arrr matey...it was a pirate's dream and new year indeed! Some of us took one of the afternoons to go sight seeing and saw a beautiful Botanical Garden, the fort, spectacular island views and other sites on the island of St Vincent.

The diving in St Vincent was full of critters including flying gunnards, SEA HORSES, and all sorts of eels, fish, crustations, squids, octopi and more. We even saw some nursesharks, an eagle ray (the other boat saw 5 of them) and a number of turtles. Again we dove a wreck in St Vincent that was quite nice and FULL OF LIFE! :birthday:

The walls in St Vincent were quite lovely but sadly due to current issues we did not dive on them as much as I would have enjoyed. And while typically more critters are up on the shallows than on the walls, the walls were stunning none the less and I would have enjoyed a bit more time on them.

After St Vincent we headed back to Isle de Rhone area to dive Diamond rock among other sites. These sites were layered in varying corals, and sponges and typcially centered around rocks jutting from the ocean for which we dove around these islands of life. You felt as if you were the ONLY diver there and were seeing something that maybe no other diver had ever seen. It was quite lovely and beautiful. Oh yeah and the fish/critters are stupid being more in the open than on most dives! Most of these were drift dives and sometimes we stayed together as a group and sometimes we found ourselves in 'several groups'. It did not matter as we all dove with VERY BIG SAFETY SAUSAGES (some bigger than others) :cool1: and we all practiced deploying our SMB's aka surface marker bouys and so with the private tenders these small boats could find us no matter where we surfaced. :wakawaka:

Two of our divers started and completed thier DEEP specialty and christened those skills on the Bianca C a luxury liner that sunk in the 60's in 90-165 ft of water. While parts of her are sadly crumbling to the ocean floor...the first class swimming pool is still in tact and the bow is still intact and she still makes a beautiful dive albiet way to short for most of us. The Bianca C was dove on our last day of diving and was followed up by a very shallow dive in Grenada proper as the final dive of the trip and representing the first island of the Grenadines.

After diving we headed to Fish Friday to taste and experince the local culture and we delivered our school supplies to the Boy's Home. They not only remembered us from several years ago...they even remembered that I was from Texas! :teeth:

Our favorite dive instructor joined us for the evening in town and was almost as much fun as the venue itself! Yep...that would be our very own Geoff aka Jake Blues! :birthday: We were the first group he had hung out with since being on the island and in fact it was the first time he'd been able to see ANY of the island since arriving 4 months earlier.

Tammy aka SeaSeaker stayed a few extra days diving with Aquanauts Grenada (lucky girl) :birthday: while the rest of us started traveling home after a wonderful trip and exceptionally wonderful way to start the new year off right....DIVING!!! :teeth:

Our dive crew was quite good ESPECIALLY our newest member Geoff aka Jake Blues and our only real complaint was that Geoff didn't get to dive with us EVERY dive! :teeth:

We only wish you all could have joined us...but then there is always NEXT YEAR!! :teeth:

I swear I know a diver that brags about the size of his sausage and said it was about 16' long. I wonder if we're talking about the same guy. The embarassing thing is when he has customers in his shop and and talks about the length of his sausage and actually pulls it out and shows everyone. So everyone doesnt get their mind in the gutter, I am talking about a "safety sausage".

yup it came on the trip allright....

otw tried to deploy from 40' depth, but only got it to stand 8' or so.... its a SMB with aspirations of becoming a Dsmb... but due to the sheer volume involved, he did say it is designed for primarily surface deployment...

if you get it filled underwater otw said it has something like 150# of lift, but I would question that after having seen the volume (length and diameter are both pretty respectworthy) and would guess it to lift over 200#... not something you want to get tangled up with during deployment if you got a good fill heading up the inside of the 16' barrel

Yes it was a great trip! My travel arrangements didn't allow me to make it quite as soon as the rest, but I managed to get to the boat first and greet everyone as they were coming up the ladder from the tender to the Wind Dancer. What a great group of people!!

Highlights for me...I wish I had pictures, but will have to settle for my thousand words or so as a uw camera is a ways off for my budget...

I really enjoyed the night dive off Sub Rock where OTWdiver and I saw a sting ray, a free swimming blue eel, and a Spanish Lobster - a kind of Slipper Lobster. This was my first opportunity to see a ray so that made it extra special.

Getting my deep dive specialty was quite interesting. Not only did I learn to communicate clearly and specifically, I also had a chance to practice using an alternate air source – though the first session gave me the unique experience of having to switch to yet another air source due to an issue with the first stage on the bottle. Hoping to see some of those pics on the board OTWdiver… :D ...I think my avatar needs an update!

Sail Rock was quite interesting as I saw my second ray, this time during the day and an Eagle Ray. Apparently I missed the nurse shark that swam under me, but the ray really made my dive!

The HMS Purini was interesting…and made for an interesting opportunity to watch WW in action as a true wreck lover! It was also fascinating to observe a lobster molting alongside the wreck – one of two times I saw this happen on the trip, very fascinating!

I enjoyed diving the Bianca C, seeing the size of the wreck was truly amazing and seeing the intact swimming pool was an interesting phenomenon.

Shark Reef was a great dive, lots of lobster, in particular a group with one large lobster and 4 smaller ones all together among many other lobsters. There was also an area with a nurse shark resting with its head tucked under a formation and directly on the other side of the formation (less than a foot away) a huge crab. Small arrow crabs tucked in areas of the reef and a huge turtle free swimming topped off the dive.

Happy New Year to all you who missed the totally awesome SD New Year's on the Wind Dancer.
It was a great trip.

As WW mentioned in her first post, I stayed on an extra couple of days in Grenada and dove with Aquanauts.
I was totally lucky and got to dive the Bianca C again and I think it was better the second time since I knew the scoop a bit and could relax and explore a bit more.

My second day of diving with Aquanats we did another wreck called the Shakem. It was very very cool. It is a 180' cargo ship that was transporting cement in 2001. The divemaster told me that she started taking on water and the crew "made a run for Grenada" but didn't make it. The ship hit the reef, and you can see the huge dent in the hull at the bow, and you can see from above that the impact "accordianed" the ship. It is sitting intact on the bottom in 100ft of water and it lies on the bottom fully loaded with cargo intact. The anchor chains hang down in front and the cargo crane on the top at the stern is very cool. The prop and rudder are visible and fully intact, too. The wreck is home to some cool critters and we saw large grouper, stingray, and shark. Dare I say it :wakawaka: - I think it may have been better than the Bianca C because I could explore all of the ship from the mast, top deck, crane, and all the way down to the anchors, prop and rudder.

The second dive on each day was a reef closer to Grenada. We did one area called the Black Forest, aptly named for all its black coral. It was quite beautiful.

I had a great trip and will be looking forward to New Year 2010 at sea again with SD.

Cheers!
Tammie aka SeaSeeker
Carpe Diem!

I am trying to upload a few pics but they don't seem to be getting there. I'll try from home this evening.
