With several trips by single divers, perhaps some of you know something more about this

Newspapers.... a aaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhh !

I quote the first comment on the story:

(Reuters) - Thieves stole a $550,000 gold bar from a treasure museum where it went on display after a Florida salvager recovered it from the wreck of a Spanish galleon that lay on the ocean floor for centuries, the museum's executive director said.

The first sentence of this article is among the worst ever written in the English language.

gold bar was inside a glass case

Uh.... it sure didn't look like glass to me, it didn't feel like glass. I think it was plexiglass or acrylic or polycarbonate or something.

No I do not think the case was glass either now that you mention it.

I saw this article pop up on the breeders this afternoon. This is a travesty, if these thevies are found jailtime isn't appropriate for them buying them in the quicksands would be more appropriate.

What about the possibility that it was an inside job or perhaps an insurance scam, like when business owners or homeowners set fires :welcome: ? What is impact on all those divers who bought shares at same time as dive trip?

The place it was stolen was in the museum. It is IMPOSSILBE for it to be an inside job as most of the staff are family or long long long time associates. If they were staff they would have been recognized running away.

Secondly this item will be impossible to fence and so will be melted for its gold value which of course is the travesty as its value is its HISTORICAL VALUE. But the punks who stole it don't know that...they just know that they could HOLD IT IN THEIR HANDS and then smash the container it was in and run with it. (This was a very special exhibit that let you HOLD a GOLD BAR in your hand inside this special plexiglass case.)

Since the article was in the museum it does not impact the investors in the company. The museum is a separate entity from the shop from the investors etc. The museum is non-profit.

Investors own ALL the treasure that is found each year they are an investor. The treasure owned by the museum has been donated to it either by investors who want a tax break or by the Fisher Family. Fortunately many of the truly priceless artifacts like this gold bar do end up in the museum so as to be preserved for posterity but they have to be bought or donated in order to do so.

So only the museum and the Fisher Family and history will be hurt directly by this loss and not the investors.

Sure it wont pop up in some small gallery, but I doubt they would go through all the effort for such an impure smelting prospect... I wouldnt be surprised if its in some private collectors collection just as a gold bar. I mean who is really going to see that and say it must be the stolen bar from the atocha? I'm not sure of the markings but I'm presuming without documentation directly next to it, anyone without direct intimate knowledge of it would be unable to differentiate it from any of the countless other spanish gold bars. And I don't think that bar will be anywhere near any of the mel fisher conservationists any time soon. Not to say its gone, but it makes no sense to steal that for smelting value.
