Hello Tim,

My thoughts are that there are so many amazing destinations, such as the Cocos trip you are looking at, that I will not support a destination that is killing dolphins, when I can opt for another place. Ed

I did a quick google search. Below is the first article that I read. It was dated January of this year, so it is recent. As I was initially asking Kamala to look into the Solomons while at BTS, as an add on to a Fiji trip, I am very unhappy to read this report, and have decided that I will not travel to the Solomons personally. The positive is that Fiji offers a very wide variety of diving options, and a Fiji exclusive trip is a wonderful option. Ed

Ed please share your findings...its important to have a clearer perspective of what has been found. Thank you, kamala

Thanks, Ed! Looks like I'll be scratching this one off the list for a while. Good info. Appreciated. Posted Image/>

while im no fan of the hunting,i dont think the issue is so cut and dried, hunting is a means of survival for the few in the solomons who do this, and until another form of income(tourism, perhaps) is forthcoming, probably will continue.should we boycott all countries for their objectionable practices,i.e, japan-whales,and they certainly have other forms of income, the usa-animal testing, middle east-human rights,indonesia-dynamite fishing and china for just about everything?i think tourism spreads environmental and intercultural education as well as income and just might put an end to such horrific practices.with that said i will pursue a dive trip there in the future.

It was in Kauai where she saw the Humpback. They heard them all dive, which she was told was common for this time of year. They just got real lucky and had one cruise by. I have always had an interest in Magdalena Bay myself. I do not believe you can get in the water with them there though. I seem to recall from years ago, that the interaction was limited to groups in a zodiak. As for the Holbox trip, Kamala ran one last year that tarted around June 29 or so. I am not positive, but think the whale sharks are in that area for about two months. Ed

My sister just returned from a trip to Hawaii. While there, she did one day of diving. As luck would have it, the group received a visit from a humpback whale mid way through their dive. She said the experience made that one of the best dives of her life, and she wants to dive with the whales again if possible. There is an island South of Tahiti called Rurutu. Every year during the months of July to October, humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to Rurutu to mate, calve, and nurse in the shallow waters. I know someone else recently asked about diving French Polynesia. I think a combination trip of diving Rurutu and a second island in the area would be very interesting. Looking at the interest that the Holbox trips generate with the whale sharks, I would guess this might also be a popular option. Any thoughts? Hopefully Kamala can dig up some more info while at BTS this weekend. Ed

Was your sister's trip to the Big Island, Ed? Another great place to experience the humpbacks is Magdalena Bay on the West Cape of the Baja Peninsula, West of Los Cabos. It's on the same migration route.

Holbox has definitely grabbed my attention, as well. I have been in the water with a Whale Shark outside San Carlos, though never in the numbers seen in the photos Kamala has posted. When does that trip generally run?

Take care.

The whalesharks you saw in my pictures were taken on our Best Of Mexico trip which we run every two years or so to include 4 nites and 3 days in Cozumel and then 1 day in the Cenotes and then 2 days with the whalesharks. Its an amazing trip and we could look at doing it again in 2014 since we did it in 2012. The whaleshark season for that area is June, July and August.

I would be into that one. It would be the first trip that my elder son could go on. Could be a great refresher! :thankyou:/>

I'd be interested in Holbox. Please just not first two weeks of June. I can plan around any other time....
Any possibility of another Dominica or San Sal trip in 2014?

I really enjoyed doing Belize over New Years a couple of years ago and would be all into doing that again. Liveaboards won't work for me that time of year as I have to be back to work January 2nd!

I can look at the HOLIDAY week going forward...this year worked out good for the Sat to Sat option...but as you noted it does mean returning to work a couple of days later.
