We all know what happens when we are less than successful in this endeavor...but what can we do to better pack liquids we do need to travel with?

According to TSA:

Liquids Rule

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Placing these items in the small bag and separating from your carry-on baggage facilitates the screening process. Pack items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in checked baggage.

Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening.

Exemptions Inbound International Flights

You may carry duty free liquids in secure, tamper–evident bags, more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your carry-on bag if:

  • The duty free liquids were purchased internationally and you are traveling to the United States with a connecting flight.
  • The liquids are packed in a transparent, secure, tamper-evident bag by the retailer and do not show signs of tampering when presented to TSA for screening.
  • The original receipt for the liquids is present and the purchase was made within 48 hours.

Liquids more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml not in a secure, tamper-evident bag must be packed in checked baggage.

Considering how TSA changes the rules and it makes them up out of thin air. Want to get liquids through slap a RX label on everything as at that point they can't question it (they'll try but easily deterred)

I haven't had a problem with liquids on carry on other than Fiji Airways taking water after the security checkpoint and before the plane.  So other than putting them in the zip-lock or trying what tooth mentions I usually pack them in the checked.  I do put them in a large zip-lock in case they leak and make sure they are padded.

This is such an open ended question though so it depends on what liquids you are trying to pack.  :ninja:

For years I've packing liquids in a golf shoe bag (like below). Its easy to clean in the event of a spill and protects my other luggage. I also have a plastic zip-up bag for my travel-size liquids. This protects against any rare spillage.

My Tips include....

1. Purchase bottles that are clear and fasten securely. Clear, colored plastic is fine, but cloudy, opaque plastic won't pass. However, pre-packed manufacturer products may be in original packaging. According to the TSA, every bottle must be "3.4 ounce (100ml)

2. Make a "must have" list of liquids to take in your carry-on, and isolate your packing to these things. Many items are obtainable in your destination city, minimizing the need to bring them on the plane. If it's something that the hotel may have, or the drugstore stocks, leave it home if traveling domestically. THIS REALLY DOES NOT APPLY IF TRAVELING INTERNATIONALLY.

3. Purchase 3 oz. travel bottles. If you need to travel wtih a lot of liquids purchase as many bottles as will fit into a quart-sized bag. These bottles may then be filled with a variety of liquids, including alcohol, body wash, shampoo or perfume. Experiment to get the most number of bottles into a quart sized bag. Do not add other things such as tooth brush, make up etc if you truly need to maximize your liquids. Put these items separately to give yourself the maximum amount of room for liquids.

4. Purchase travel sized bottles of items that must be sterile for use. Contact lens solution must be purchased pre-packaged, or there's a risk of eye infection. Don't attempt to repackage medical supplies in travel bottles, because cleanliness is key. You may refill mouthwash since they are usually alcohol based but some prefer the ones you can get in the store.

5. Tape the tops of the bottles shut before sealing in the bag. Planes shake and rattle, and even the tightest top can pop open. A piece of tape over the top cuts the risk of a wet mess upon your arrival.

6. Label your 3 oz. bottles clearly with black permanent marker on a white label. They'll be easier to use, and security personnel will appreciate the clarity if something catches the agent's eye.

7. Travel sized toiletries are expensive due to the extra packaging. So look at discount and dollar stores where you may find them for .25 cents each vs $1.00 or more. Or just use refillable bottles and save money that way.

OK, this is kinda silly, but TSA confiscated my unopened jar of Planter's Peanut Butter at the Security Check-IN at Loga/Boston .  They consider it a LIQUID and they took it....I was very sad.

You ARE able to bring alcohol "nips" in your bag of liquids, but you are "not allowed" to open them during flight  ;)

This is new so I don't know if it will work, but I snapped pictures (on my phone) of my medication labels and an individual pill, in case I get asked.  I have not had problems with medications before, because I pack them in a zippered dark colored nylon pouch and leave them in the carry-on.

I also have snapped pictures of my C-cards, Nitrox, driver's license and insurance cards on my phone, JIC.

All good ones Paula!

Sadly they consider peanut butter as a liquid/gel/paste....yeah we all know the truth....they really just want a PB&J later for a snack! But I've also had PB taken as well. NOW if its 3.4oz or less...it safe.

Yougurt is also going to be confiscated UNLESS its 3.4 oz or less.

Another tip....

If the bottle says 3.4 oz or more on it...EVEN IF IT IS HALF EMPTY they will still confiscate the product because of what the bottle says. So be extra careful...its not truly how much product there is but what the bottle says!
