Hey gang...I am pleased to announce that SingleDivers.com will be getting its own static IP tonight at 10pm Eastern. The site will be up and down for 6 hrs as it migrates to its new home.
We expect this change will help us in a number of ways and will be worth the inconvenience encountered. And since its Super Bowl Sunday...we are hoping that most of our members will be offline during that timeframe anyway!
Thank you all! kamala

So, did Scotty's transporter malfunction, tossing us all into an alternate universe?
I know, just me. I KNEW it!!!
Hopefully static IP site assignment will also minimize those pesky "Site not Found" browser errors. So far so good...

We are hoping for a variety of benefits from the static IP. One would be less hiccups in service such as you described. One would be better standing with SPAM ratings. (In this case when you use a shared provider if ANY of the accounts spam someone...all the accounts are affected. We are hoping that having our own static IP will help to resolve this.)
As an aside...I discovered another hiccup on the site going down AFTER it had migrated successfully. Yesterday it went down twice and I had to call the carrier to fix. In all 3 instances in the last 3 hours the server had gone down. I have escalated this up technical support to address the root cause.
Fingers crossed we'll get to the bottom of it! kamala

It may or may not have been an issue. Half-way through the DHCP lease duration a computer will attempt to renew its address lease. As long as the server serving the site was up, the effect was similar to a static address. The problem comes in when the server is down for maintenance and the DHCP server hands out the address the site's server had been using to another computer. I don't know what the lease duration is for the site's hosting provider, but 7+ days isn't unusual. How have you managed to run this site for so long without a static IP?
BTW, a static address is typically still dynamically assigned, but the static address is reserved for the specific server at the DHCP server. Probably more than you wanted to know, but there it is anyway.

Static IPs have a slightly different meaning in the hosting world than you may think. A better term might be "dedicated IP."
When your web browser connects to our website with the URL http://www.singlediv...dex.php?act=idx, it sends a request that looks something like this:
GET /surfaceinterval/index.php?act=idx HTTP/1.1 Host: www.singledivers.com
What hosting providers realizes after the HTTP 1.1 spec made the Host: line mandatory was that they didn't need to provide everyone with their own IP, they could host hundreds or thousands of domains on the same IP address and use the Host: line to differentiate them. The IP address that you connected to for SingleDivers was the same IP address for lots of other domains. The purchase of a "static IP" moved us on to our own dedicated IP address that we don't share with anyone else. We still share hardware and such with other sites, but we're on our own IP address.
