Should be an easy question to answer. My Cochran battery finally gave up the ghost this weekend (Lasted three years). I have secured a replacement, but have a quick Q about the seals.

There are two seals on the battery compartment door. Do I need to silicone them (like a camera housing seal) prior to re-installing? If so, is there a recommended procedure for removing them from the screw plug?

Yes you will need to lube them like a camera oring. If they are clean and they should be...then leave them on the post and lube them. If for any reason they look dirty or have battery corrison on them then remove the oring (it should be dry so you can grip it and not damage it. Squeeze it at one end to force a slight bulge on the other end and use a wooden toothpick to gently remove it from the post.) Once removed lube like you would a camera housing seal.

I hope that answers your questions...I'm over 3 years...amost 4 and my batteries are still going strong. You can also buy 2 back up replacement batteries at the store or get an extra lithium from Cochran so that should it ever fail on a trip you can easily change it out.

By the way...the computer will store your data without losing if it you replace the battery fairly soon after it fails. While it doesn't have to be immediately...you should not wait days and weeks either.

Simon - I use the std sea and sea grease that comes with there strobes or cords on my cochran, and only need a dab to get the job done. plus if the compartment floods the computer is still safe as the battery compartment is separate from the internals.

Which battery did you put in, 2 N cells or a saft cell? If it was N cells i would say they need to be replaced after one year even if not used just to be safe
