Hey gang...I'm looking for ways to TALK when I travel internationally. Many of you use a variety of tools to accomplish this vital task. Some use world phones and others use the internet. What do you use and why? What are the pros and cons and what are the approximate costs?

I am leaning towards the world phone so if you have one do you have a good plan? I also have Skype installed on my pc and been playing with it. I use a VoIP phone solution for our office phone and it can go internationally as well. About the only thing that does not work well for me going internationally is my regular celfone but just because it won't work with my present carrier does not mean I couldn't have a phone for int'l travel only with another carrier.

So please chime in if you have input on this subject...it will help me and it will help other members as well! :welcome:

While I have not yet tried this and it may not appeal to those of you who do not have an ipod touch, here is an amazing practically free option-- http://www.nytimes.c...e.html?emc=eta1 :welcome:

Skype is a good option. You can talk free to any other Skype user and make calls to real phones for low cost as long as you have a decent Internet connection.
Remember, email is an inefficient communications forum. You may not read things the way it was intended. Give people the benefit of the doubt before firing back... Especially if it is ME...! ;)

Not a lot. The main reason for going on a liveaboard is to go dive places where day boats from civilization can't get to. So it reduces the options.

I know for our offshore platforms, we use Irridium Satellite Phones like this one

http://satellitephone.com/Iridium.php

You can rent one for $100 a week plus per minute fee.

Kamala,

I have a friend that had a satellite phone for sale. As much as you travel might be worth owing one. I'll check to see if he still has it and what he wants for it. Will PM you with the details.

The App is .99cents but the monthly service fee is $15. $15/mo for a second line maybe a good deal??

1st choice, netbook w/ built in camera/ mic when travelling. When I have wifi, I phone home using SKYPE. I enrolled about a year ago and deposited a $20 credit for calls made to USA phones from atl/carrib islands via the netbook. Sometimes there is echo or hiss and drop lines, but I'm not closing business deals via these calls. Just 3 or 4 minute calls home to let the family know I'm still alive and kicking ever other day or so after diving. Probably about $6 is on credit, good until it runs out. I've been VERY happy with the service.

2nd choice, With no internet connection. I try to find the closest island payphone and purchase $10 phone card from the local bodega and use the island phone system.

3rd, My personel cell phone. Employer provides a work phone for USA 24/365. When diving I use a personel phone with a <$25 monthly fee that works on most islands. I'm charged a roaming fee and higher minute rate but this works well for me.

No internet, no public phone, no cell coverage........................................................................
.......................NO PROBLEM!!!!!

With no internet service you very likely have no phone service either. I have a satellite phone that is an expensive solution, but beware that satellite service available in one area may not be available in another. For urgent safety communications there is little option but to use an appropriate satellite phone. For business and other less urgent matters I would use Skype, as it's never let me down (other than in Belize where it's blocked). Also use a good VPN so you can overcome any local blocking.

No internet, no public phone, no cell coverage

Now THAT is a vacation to me. When I get a week off work, I give the boss a longitude and a latitude in the vicinity of where I am going and disappear. Their tendency to call me instead of thinking for themselves is too ingrained to do otherwise.

When I when on my long trip to SE Asia last year I took my Macbook and used Skype, it's was like 12 bucks a year to call any US based number, regardless of where you were in the world. I was able to make calls from almost anywhere that there was wifi. If you find an internet cafe (if you hotel doesn't have access) it's pretty cheap to make a few Skype calls. If you don't have built in speakers/mic with noise cancellation, then Logitech makes a USB headset for about 40 bucks.

Bjs
So, if my computer is flashing 212 .. 212 .. 212 does that mean I can't go any deeper?

Yes, noise cancelling headphones make a BIG improvement on SKYPE reception.

I've used Skype for international calling with a great deal of success, and for staying in touch with my son and DIL in Denver. Funny thing is that my communication with a lovely lady in Manila was often far more stable than with Denver! Go figure.

Stan -- Do you have a recommendation for a small compact one (NC is a major plus especially if it had the ability to plug into a iphone (with a adapter if needed), as the one i have currently at the house, is a older labtec that does a good job its just big and bulky and i would like one that

as for when traveling the skype option works as long as you have a cell (if your phone has that app option) or a wifi signal. if your in a area that doesnt have cell coverage you only option at that point is satellite communication and that's expensive hardware and usage.

I use a combo if instant messaging, video conferencing (aslong as i have a solid internet connection) and skype. Then depending on where I am in the world sometimes i will pick up a local sim card to stick in my backup phone which is unlocked. Depending on the location you can buy prepaid sims with voice only or voice and data packages. One word of warning i would not forward your current line to a phone where you have a local sim unless you want to have some major fees added on your bill for routing (learned that one that hard way and it was a $150.00 mistake). The other option is to have your voicemail messages also sent as emails so that you can get them that way. Just a idea

Dan, I use a Sony NC headset from Costco. Always on and "ON" when in airplane. The Bose NC are very nice but very expensive. I think a compact headphone or ear buds would work just as well with my netbook using SKYPE, I just need a little bit more volume and less backgound when on phone calls. The micraphone on netbook seems better that the speakers. I don't have a mic/phone headset, but Skype will sell you one of thier's. Ss
