Zipping up the checked bag for Roatan and weighing with my Singledivers.com travel scale (don't leave home with out it) the digital scale reads 50.6 lbs. IMO I'm Good-To-G0. I'll wait for the ticket counter agent to challenge bag weight before I repack.
So what's your set point for checked bag weight? How much cushion do you think airlines give you?

I always pack something on top that is easy to grab out if they hassle me. Keep in mind the amount you fly impacts how much the airlines will hassle you. I'm status on AA so they allow me up to 52 pounds per bag if needed. On other carriers that I am status on they allow me up to 51 pounds per bag. Once they let a bag go at 52 or 53 because my 2nd bag was only 42 pounds. Instead of making me shuffle they let it slide. BUT I WAS STATUS with them.
When you are not status they do not cut you ANY SLACK and I try to keep the bags at 50 even as they can absorb moisture when going to the airport or the scale at the airport may be off etc. If you arrive early and the line is long behind you and you pull out your hand scale saying you can't understand why its more than 50# since it was on the money a few hours ago...they will often let it slide.
Most will allow anything under 51 pounds...BUT keep in mind that 50.6 oz can read as 51 pounds on some scales...so be careful and prepared to pull out some some object to shove into your carry on.

I generally try to keep things just below 50# so that I've got some wiggle room with any reasonable variance on a scale. As Kamala said even changes in moisture content can make a HUGE difference in the end. I remember trying to come back from Jamaica with a slightly damp wetsuit (2.5mm) and that made the bag musc heavier than on the way out.
Saying that I also try to keep things accessible that might need to be pulled to a carry on bag.

I try to stay at 45lbs on the way out. This is to allow for water weight in case everything doesn't get dried out on the way back that can add a few pounds on the way back.

I fly with 2 checked bags one has all my gear and clothing and that one is 49.5 lbs the other is a storm case with photo gear canister light all batteries. It weighs about 38 lbs. Can't figure out how to do it any lighter than that.
Each wreck has a tale to tell about its life and its demise.
If you are observant while diving in dark places listen to the account each has to tell, You cannot come away unaffected.

I'm glad I'm seeing other people with 2 checked bags. Mine will be 45 each on the way out. The equipment is heavy!!Once I give out school supplies and eat my goodies I should be able to fold up the carry on holding my regulator and check it in one of the bags on the way home. I didn't think about the water weight ....good point.

On the Truk and Palau trip when I get to Guam I'll mail home my double wing and a couple regs to free up some room for ...purchases. I won't need all that tech gear in Palau.

I would confirm most comments here.I try & stay in the 48-49 lb. range for (dive gear bag). My other checked clothes bag is in the 40 lb. range.My carry on bag with all reg's,camera stuff,netbook and mask is maxed out for space. I've played for hrs. trying to get it down to 1checked bag...Not gonna happen.Just as a aside comment.I do bring a heavy duty plastic bag for the wet items .
Another thing I do is keep a list of all dive gear, description ,purchased date&cost.This would come in handy if the bag were to find another home....Even a quick click of the camera phone b/4 you zip it up....We all have invested $$$$.Well worth a shot..

Another reason to use old school alkaline batteries in my lights. Usually 12 c-cells offsets the water weight gain.

I like to keep my bag around 45 pounds. That allows for water weight on the way home, also a little give or take in either my scale or the airports. I rarely get everything I want into one bag and keep below 50 pounds, so I end up taking a second bag. They charge much more for an overweight bag, than an extra bag. On all trips, I realize I have more stuff than I need, but...when I am packing to go on the trip, I cannot help but pack stuff for in case repair is needed, conditions are not what I expect.

Wow, I love it guys with as much baggage as women. I repack a few times and one bag is out of the question. My size 10 shoes don't help. I'm sure the guys can relate to big shoes, but most likely only pack 1-2 pairs...where as I have 5 plus the pair I'm wearing.

I only check one bag. It's usually 49+ lbs. Flip flops don't weigh much and most times that's all the shoes I bring. On the return I leave all I can behind. I've had batteries confiscated at the airport, so after the week I leave them behind. Any unused bath supplies get trashed. I know I'm going to have room for any purchases coming home!

I check two bags, one dive gear and another non dive. My regulators, gauges, masks and computer go carry on.
