Here's a question. One of my close friends, 37 years old, had a stroke about 5 years ago. It doesn't seem to affect him and he wants to learn how to dive. What are his chances of that happening?

He'll need to get clearance from his doctor, but I know a few divers (one is a member here) who've had strokes and continue to dive. His doctor can consult with the diving specialists at DAN if necessary.

I agree with Walter (of course). With the caveat that he will need to see someone in person, the issues will be:
What was the cause of the stroke
What is the chance that the cause is still around and may happen again
What permanent deficits does he have, even subtle ones
What other medical conditions does he have that will factor in
What medications is he on for the stroke, or other conditions
All that being said, I took tech training from a guy who was a cervical level quadriplegic from a motor vehicle crash in college. He was told he would never walk again. You should see him now hoisting doubles down the 87 steps to the lake. Not the same of course as a stroke, but the concept is similar. Be sure your friend sees a physician, possibly a neurologist, with diving knowledge. Tell him good luck, and invite him to hang out on this website while he is waiting for an answer.

I had a stroke in my 30's while working on a TV documentary with the Cousteau's nearly 20 years ago. I have been diving off-and-on ever since without a problem. However, be sure that your friend gets good advice from a medical doctor, and preferably one who dives.
