Briefly put, these creatures have a brain the size of a walnut, and will eat anything that walks, swims, crawls, or can fly. They aren't smart...just hard-wired to survive with exceptional instinctual skills.
... can indeed be temporarily induced to a stuperous, or tonic state, if placed on it's back, on land, and their stomach area gently rubbed.

I feel your pain...my second son slumbers till hunger awakens him to action, as with the gators. I have my doubts about the walnut sized brain...sounds a bit large. Kid's got nice teeth though!
