Personally, I think both have their place, and I always carry at least two spools and 1 reel, depending on the mission. ( I always carry 2 bags, but that's another discussion)
For shooting a bag in the 70 to 90' foot range, I find a spool is more efficient, less likely to jam and easier to deploy.
On the other hand, I find a spool with more than 100' of line too bulky, and if I have to, I then prefer to use a reel.
I always use much caution when using a reel for vertical travel, as a jam can have devastating consequenses, if the diver is not willing to let go.
For horizontal travel such as caving or wreck penetration I prefer reels.
In this case, jams can easely be remedied.
There is no right or wrong. It's a matter of personal preference and comfort.
