I am hoping to take a summer holiday in New Enland late July/early August, staying with friends who are taking summer houses in Mystic and Cape Cod. As it is my policy to dive wherever I am in the world, grateful if any local/knowlegeable SD members can:

Recommend "must do" dive sites and dive operators that are accessible from these locations
Water temeprature and general conditions to expect
Dry suit or semi-dry? I can dive with both....
Any other relevant information/clubs you can suggest I might contact (need a buddy!)

Hi Sheena,
If your staying mid Cape Cod this dive shop site may help. www.capedivelocker.com, I only dive warm waters. End of summer on CC sound a 7mm w/ boots & gloves should do. I've seen divers go with 5mm if hearty souls.

Hi Sheena,
I'm in Newport which is right between the Cape and Mystic. I should be around for much of July and August so give me a shout of your open dates and we'll see what we can do. The water in Narragansett Bay should be close to sixty F by then although I wear a drysuit year round here. My 3 boys wear 7-mm wetsuits so it is up to your preference. Water is usually warmer in Buzzards Bay if you dive out of the Cape. The dive shop that I use is the Newport Diving Center.

As you get the dates down I may be around as well. We typically dive Glouster and Rockport on the northshore but do RI as well. I think you'd find the northshore a more interesting dive area compared to the cape. If the cape it is than Sandwich Town Beach my be the best area but must stay away from the Canal entrance. Having just bought "dry" and not used yet can't comment on that. I have dove 7mm w/7mm hooded vest in January temps around 42, so it's all realative to what you can tolerate but a 7mm should be plenty and probably no need of hood and gloves IMHO.

New England

Cape Ann is 30 miles north of Boston and has access to a few nice wrecks and reefs. The dive op is right off the wharf with the hotel and was highly recommended on several boards. We ended up canceling as the Grenada trip was at the same time. If you want the cosmopolitan life then Boston is better obviously. Cape Ann is a more laid back (and cheaper) atmosphere.

Looking at the map it is off Block Island, right? This could work as Mystic connection likes to visit Block Island and is ex RN submariner/lapsed diver - and I am ex RN Scot, so not just a tropical warm water woosie (diving in N Ireland and Scotland early July). I am not a wreck specialist but planning to do it. I am a deep specialist however. Any other takers?

Can we keep in touch - this whole trip depends on my mothers health...and its continued improvement. (I have had to ditch 3 weeks of Red Sea diving, so trying to salvage something comparable....!) Sheena

A good idea, but as my time is limited and primarily to visit friends, I want to try and fit diving around seeing them. perhaps another time Simon - it looks a cool location. Thanks for suggesting it.

I'm heading out to the U-853 this Sunday (27 May 2007) with a new charter boat. Depending how it goes, I can likely set up another visit sometime later this summer. I will caution that this dive is not an introductory dive as the conditions can be quite nasty including rough seas, depth (130'), current, cold and limited viz. I've never penetrated it and don't have plans for such on this visit.

Well one "must do" is a Happy Hour with the Moose and gang! We really get zany!

When you come out here, let me know. I'll zoom up there to show you around (albeit my dive knowledge of that area isn't so great.) I was stationed in Ft Devens for a year (just outside of Boston) back in the 90's. I'm more than happy to buddy up for some diving anytime.

I can even bring my motorcycle if you want the "HD Tour of NE." I think Heidi is still recovering from her ride home from NYC last week. And I took it easy!

I can throw the sidecar on so I can bring my dive gear. Oh, remind me to tell you the story about riding my motorcycle in FULL dive gear. (everything less mask and fins!)

Thanks for this. I can cope with up to sea state 6/7 and current, but temperature and viz may be a shock to the system after a year of diving in the REd Sea. However, can kit up accordingly. Depth is on limit of my qualification - I dive to 30+m regularly but not qualified for wreck penetration (ahem!). However, do let me know if it is really is a very challenging site...

this is not the image to leave me with before I retire for the night..... (which it is in Cairo)

And so kind to offer the HH/tour of dive sites etc - I will also be in the NYC area too hopefully... I met the SD REd Sea divers a couple of nights ago - joining SD was definatley a good move.
