Ok so I was posed an interesting question this evening...one that I need your help with!

What island/exotic destinations are exactly one (1) flight from New York? The airport does not matter...just needs to be only one flight.

I thought of the following:

1. Bonaire
2. Cancun
3. Cozumel
4. Belize
5. San Juan, PR

What others?

Shannon Ireland, Frankfurt Germany, Amsterdam the Netherlands are some I have done from NYC airports. Or did you want scuba destinations only.

I think if you went to each airline sites, found their route maps, you'd come up with an extremely long list. What are you really trying to accomplish?

ARUBA,

Many non stop flights with many airlines. You can stay at High rise on beach hotels, Low rise across street from beach hotels, short walk to beach motels and condos.

Diving covers reefs, wrecks, drift, shore.... 45-90 miles from Bonaire & Curacao of the ABC Islands.

Great Nightlife, Casinos, Dining!!!

A fun island!!! I'm a big fan of Aruba. :cheerleader:

Thai Air has a JFK to Bangkok direct flight (17h 35m).

The qeustion was from a member looking for a great 'island' destination that is one flight from NY!

Aruba is a great option...and that means most likely Barbados as well! :cheerleader:

And I never thought about Singapore and Thailand!

Not sure they want European destinations but who knows...they are all 1 flight from NY!!! :cheerleader:

Looks like they need to do a little research on the internet on their own. Suggest they try the Dream Map at travelocity.com located at this address:
http://dps1.traveloc...om/dreamMap.ctl

This will show fares to worldwide destinations, and they can determine if there is a nonstop flight going there easlily on any travel website just by clicking the "nonstop" box, just like I did.

What's up with the "non-stop" or "one flight" part? Who cares if there is a change of planes if the price is right to the right location? Is this a challenge to try to find cool non-stop flights????

Perhaps this member can start their own tread and provide some information about what they are interested in in terms of activities and price range.

Hello.

Thank you all for your help!

I am the one who asked Kamala for non-stop diving destinations from NY. I am sorry - I was hoping for a list "off-the-top" of her head.

"The story" - I was happily planning my live-abord vacation to Turks & Caicos. And i mentioned it to my sister who lives in NY and is the mother of two wonderfull children. I adore my niece and nephew and since i live in CA, I do not get to see them often enough. My sister suggested us doing a trip together during the kids' spring break. My sister and my niece are very "poor" fliers, so that is the origin of "non-stop from NY" requirement and a short flight requirement.

My sister suggested Dominican Republic and I've done some googling of scuba there and reviews are not that hot.

I've done Cozumel before - it would be an excellent choice, but there is a posibility of my nephew (14 yr old) trying out scuba and Cozumel would be a bit too advanced for him.

Aruba was the place of my very first dive in 1981. Is it still a good diving spot?

I've done live-aboards on Belize and Caymans - are the dive sites close enough to shore for day trips?

I've never done scuba in Puerto Rico - is it good?

I found non-stops to Bonaire - but my sister is unhappy about the length of the flight, so that probably, applies to Aruba as well.

There seams to be a non-stop to Turks & Caicos, but no non-stop flight coming back.

US Virgin Islands - how is the diving there?

Thanks for all your help!

regards,
Larisa

How about a trip to the Florida Keys.

Short, as flights go ... one plane to Miami and then a lovely drive down to whichever key you pick ... but I doubt that the airport part of traveling in the plane is the problem....
Diving is known and it would make it easier for a landbased vacation with other things to do... you don't mention that the kids/sister have passports, and thus no passports to get.

I've only dove in Florida Keys one time and it was disappointing - visibility was not great. I've been "spoiled" by tropical paradises.

Great idea Robin. And Larisa, the flights from NY to South Florida are very competitive. If you decide soon, you will probably be looking at $150 a ticket. Prices will go up very soon as people finishing booking the trips for the school breaks. Depending on where your sister lives, look for outbound at LGA, JFK, EWR or ISP. Going to MIA and FLL will be the same getting to the keys, and PBI is an option if you save a bunch on the 4 tickets by going there and adding another hour drive time. Go to expedia.com, orbitz.com or travelocity.com to see all the cheap NY fares and southwest.com if they live on long island making ISP a great option.

Well, is there a budget that we need to consider?

AA still has Provo flights JFK-PLS into March, but I imagine $800 a ticket may be an issue.

I might be wrong, but unless it was recently, there has been improvement in Keys diving.... hey you FL divers should chime in here...

Keys will not have 100+ vis but does fulfil your destination requirements, plus have things for non-divers especially within 2 months of the trip.
