WOW! A good read. My favorite tidbits as follows:

At the time it was caught, O'Shea said it would make calamari rings the size of tractor tires if cut up — but they would taste like ammonia, a compound found in the animals' flesh.

The previous largest colossal squid ever found was a 660 pound female squid discovered in 2003, the first ever landed.

Colossal squid are found in Antarctic waters and are not related to giant squid found round the coast of New Zealand. Giant squid grow up to 39 feet long, and are not as heavy as colossal squid.

All I could think of was how they would throw something like that onto the ice in Detroit during Red Wings games..

26 freaking feet? I think I'd worry more about it than a GWS.

Reminds me of the night back in Chicago in the early 80's when I invited friends of mine from high school, college and Catalina to a gourmet meal I would cook. The main course was stuffed market squid (thankfully MUCH smaller than the colossal squid). After the appetizers, I came out with the piece de resistance... and met with unexpected resistance from all but two of my dinner guests. At least I had enough squid to eat for dinner for a week.
