Let's hope it is upright. The Spiegel was not nearly as good of a dive when it was on its side.

This is the latest I've got on the Oriskany:

She was confirmed as sitting upright (approx. 60 ft. minimum depth, which would be the top of the island) by the Navy ship Resolve towing side-scan sonar approx. two hours after the sinking. Took about :37 minuts from the time of the charges going off to the time she dissapeared, but I think the seacocks had been opened up early this morning, as she looked somewhat settled from the day before.
Went down stern first with a light list to port, but appeared to level herself (the pics I have with the bow in the air show the bow parallel to the horizon) as the stern landed, then the bow slowley submerged with lots of bubbles and foam spewing all over.
Talked to Mike Barnette around 7:00 p.m, he's on one of the NOAA boats and will be on it with scooters tommorow doing the assesment.
If all is OK it will be open for diving Saturday. No moorings yet, obviously.

Looks like it was a good drop. Folks, this is gonna be one HELL of a dive.

That is excellent news!

Well, I was happy to dive it when it was on it's side and see the prop that I think is now buried in sand!

I actually got to see the Mighty O go under yesterday. It was without a doubt one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. The explosives were a lot louder than I even thought they would be. We were all holding our breath when she started to roll a little but it looks like she hit the bottom just right. Now, I can't wait to see the Oriskany under the Gulf.

Time for me to take the deco course :cool1:

Move on it. I have one tentative on for June in Austin. Keep me posted if you want to do one local. Where were you planning to dive?

12 divers from MBT Dive Shop averaged their dive computers and they all came up with 130-134ft. They make their living over there on knowing whether someting is in or out of recreational range. I trust them.

If you boys want to come to FL and take that class, I think I might be able to get you out on the Oriskany for the class dives. Top notch instructor too.

What agency do you want it with?

Perrone - is that a trick question?

I thought the "mine is better than yours" debate was over.

Best instructor always wins.

Seriously - thanks for the offer. I'm trying to knock it out this summer in Austin while Travis is relatively warm. I also have a free hotel there (my daughter's house) and it's a very short 225 mile Texas drive.

I think we need to petition to the SD team for an Oriskany trip. As a side benefit, I can take everyone through the Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola and you can laugh in astonishment at the antiques I flew.
