Having flown half way across the planet a few times, I have experienced time and dateline changes and am always seeking effective ways to stave off jet lag. I found the following article interesting but am curious what you think:

Skip the pretzels: starving may fend off jet lag

"CHICAGO (Reuters) - Starving yourself before a long flight may help prevent jet lag, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

Normally, the body's natural circadian clock in the brain dictates when to wake, eat and sleep, all in response to light. But it seems a second clock takes over when food is scarce, and manipulating this clock might help travelers adjust to new time zones, they said....click here for the full article."

Do any of you have other methods of staving off jet lag that work effectively for you?

I try to start shifting my time schedule ahead of time if possible, stay hydrated and use Ambien to try and shift my sleep cycle. Its the only time I take it. Worked on the Australia trip, and certainly didn't hurt on the Bonaire trip either.

I deprive myself of sleep before a trip so that I'll sleep on the plane and wake on the local time. By using some combination of this process I rarely experince jet lag. Of course there are those that don't like the idea of being overly tired before a trip...but it works for me very well. (And lord knows I have enough to do before leaving so I'm always busy losing sleep!) :thankyou:

I only find jet lag a problem when flying east so the trick is to say dive Fiji, fly west to GBR, Maldives, Rea Sea, maybe the Med, Bermuda and home. I'm sure trips@SingleDivers.com will help you arange this :helpsmily:

Prior to this report, I had only heard of the reversal of the body time clock by getting yourself to the time of your scheduled destination. Tried to get my brother to pull an "all nighter" last night/this morning for his 7:20AM departure today for Hong Kong, which arrives at 5AM on Monday CST. For some reason, he wasn't as enthustiastic as I was?
