I know that I need to get reef/environment friendly sun block before I head to the Dry Tortugas. I stopped by the sunblock stand at my local grocery store and of course found none. Can anyone give me an idea what products are available and what major retailers are selling it?

Two responses from other boards on the subject:

"I have bought repellent from natural food store with Eucaluptus (sp) and lemon oil in it. It works like a charm. I have also used pure ecal. oil. It smells great also. Bugs hate it!"

"I actually bought biodegradable, Coppertone Sport at Chedraui this week. It says "Biodegradable" on it, and when comparing the label to the "non-biodegradable" products...it did seem to have alot less."

the best sunblock i have found has been No-Ad (which means no advertising, and no additives) and is usually found in walmart or similar stores. This stuff is very neutral and is a green product. This is the product i used in puerto rico last summer specifically because it was biodegrable and eco friendly because i would be diving on sensitive reefs that i didnt want to cause damage to.

next on the list is bullfrog and get the cream and not the gel as the cream does a better job.

and for those traveling to buggy places like Roatan, Bullfrog now has a sunblock with insect repellant in it. It works great!

This is the only stuff I allow on my boat. Works great and is very kind to the vinyl as well.

yet another reason why to use it, now would you be referring to No-Ad or the other?

If the insect repellant contains DEET, do not use this product! There are health warnings about applying sun block and insect repellants within a half hour of each other since the sun block absorbs into your skin, taking the DEET with it. When you do apply them, apply the sunblock first and then the insect repellant.

Health Canada also recommends against sunblock and deet combinations.

I really wish they would take that product off the market because it is effective but the damage it tends to inflict is pretty bad.

This is the stuff i use now and its all natural and works just as well.
