Hey everyone...we've looked at this in the past and we've not been able to do it due to one issue or 15 other. :(

We are very light on IT support these days...(they are all volunteers and extremely busy in the summer time) but we can look again to see if our newest software upgrade will support it or not. Heck we are still fixing stuff that blew up from the last software upgrade.

And our next HUGE milestone will be our shopping cart but ACK!!! some of the base code now doesn't work with the newest revision of our message board software and supposedly there were no sql database changes etc so it SHOULD work but it does not. :taz:

Now if you are an IT type and would love to help SD have more bells and whistles...do inquire within! :D

If it were added, I'd certainly partake of the service, but I regret I can't help from a technical perspective. I'm told by my kids that I'm electronically challenged since I just started texting on my phone in the last 3 months.

Anyone think it would be interesting?

Like watching paint dry. I used to participate in a scuba chat room way back in 94-95 on my old Prodigy service. It was ok and even fun because there was just a handful of us, and we even had guest chatters. But with the exponential growth of the internet and the hundreds of members we have here, I can't picture anything fun or useful coming out of it. As WW has said, it would be tech/maintenance heavy, and to make it useful and fun, you would have to have multiple rooms and limit the number of people in each room. Even then, I much prefer to chat to people in person. In fact, the social aspect of diving was a big factor in my decision to get into diving.

Which reminds me, I always wondered what happened to the gal who used to moderate the old Prodigy scuba chat. Her handle was "Pinniped" and I only know she was in the San Francisco Bay area. Pinniped, are you here somewhere? Funny, I remember her handle, but not mine. (It wasn't Brinybay).

I would agree that on a general basis that would probably be the case. But what I find is that when there is an event that many people are anticipating it can be useful.

What I have thought would be useful would be to have virtual happy hours prior to trips. Give the people who are going on the trip a chance to interact, and ask questions outside of these long threads that develop on trips, yet still in an interactive enviroment without going just to emails. It may also give people a chance to meet their roomate prior to going on the trip, which would make that part of the SingleDivers experience even better.

There is a chatroom package that many of the PHP based BBs use, or we could use an IRC chatroom if we wanted to do it off the board. The downside of that solution is that it requires the downloading of software and then configuring which can be challenging for those who aren't quite as tech savvy.
