I planning to be in south Asia in August'ish. I'm hoping to plan a trip to the Maldives - probably liveaboard. Any recommendations about companies good to work with or avoid, places to stay on mainland India. Anything else - this is my first trip that I have taken care of all the details myself so I really don't even know where to start.

Right now I don't know exactly what dates I'll be traveling. And I probably won't know until much closer. I'll be in Afghanistan until sometime in July/August. I hope I'll be able to arrange a trip - it may end up being too short notice to arrange a trip. But if you have info on dive operations, it would be really helpful. Once I get a better feel for when I'm leaving AFG, then I'll be in touch to book the trip.

I can't provide any useful information, but I dived the South Male Atoll from a liveaboard 11 or 12 years ago and the diving was fantastic! The best I've ever done anywhere.

I'm not in AFG yet - expect to be in country about 17 March. Most likely Kandahar. What about you?

I'm actually leaving at the exact time that you're getting here. I've been all over the country. Kandahar, Bagram, Jalalabad, Khowst, you name it. No, not much diving. I'm not exactly in the role where I could just decide to go diving even if there was. Enjoy kandahar. You'll be getting there right about time the rockets start picking up. No worries, they're horrible shots. Plus, its fun as hell to watch the frenchies run like little girls every time something goes boom. Alright, threadjacking is over. Bruce is transiting back from the Maldives as I write. He went with Peter Hughes, so you could PM him. Personally, I would avoid the smaller, independent operators in male as they are pretty unreliable. I booked with one in December, then booked the flights. they then changed the dates and I was left without a diving trip :-( It was equally frustrating trying to get booked up with a dive resort - always "island time" etc.
