Thanks Ed!!

And yes, you don't know just how under the bus . . . Chris asked me to fill the rest of your charter when you come down here in a few weeks. So, not only will I be on the boat, I can "stack the deck" so to speak with my homies. :cool2: Let's just say, I'm a bit of a maverick with a spear gun. :lmao:

my 2psi...
I have a Deep See squeeze lock blunt tip that mounts to my SeaQuest BCD above the pocked.
No compensation here - overall 6.5" with a 3" blade. :wakawaka:
I can reach it with both hands, so it seems like a good place to have it.

In my short diving career, I have only been entangled once. I was sandwiched between two large "mudballs" in the Cooper River and got wrapped up in some catfish angler's 20# mono. What sucked about the situation was I needed both hands to get myself out, so I had to put my light down and effectively do it all blind. I keep what I would consider a normal sheath knife on my inner left calf and I was able to reach it no problem and then feel for the line and cut myself free. I guess the moral of the story is, regardless of your configuration, stick with the one you like so you can find your gear just by feel. The best knife in the world isn't gonna cut jack if you can't find it when you may need it most.

My main knife is on my inside calf because I dive in a lot of kelp, and I have a small back up knife hooked to an upper D-ring. Never put both knives in the same place. When I am working underwater I also carry safety scissors which I find very useful. I also have them hooked to a D-ring.

I use trauma shears. They are economical, and you can cut anything from fishing line to a penny with them in a single snip.

Not in my experience, at any rate not when the line you're trying to cut is wet and slippery. I find it just rolls out from the blades as they're closed. That's why I stopped carrying them. A sharp serrated concave blade does everything, and always works.

I have a dive knife, but I typically don't carry it.

Why not? What if you or your buddy gets entangled?

As for me, I carry a small knife centered on my waist strap. It's easy to reach with both hands. I'll also clip off some sheers or a larger knife in my pocket. Remember-- 2 is 1, and 1 is none.

I use a 4" sharp point with built in 2" serrated next to hilt combo knife, knife teathered to scabbard on waist left of central. I've used the trama shears with good luck on light weight mono fishing line UW, but attemted to remove a SS #2 fishing hook from a mooring line during a safety stop with poor results. No way would it cut the hook, a penny maybe but I don't see that as a hazard while diving. I up-graded the trama shears to a blunt point metal shears that you can find at LOWES. Sharp enough to cut a newspaper, strong enoung to cut metel. Backup mini Z-knife in BC pocket

The problem with most of the shears I see available to the public is that they are the cheap ones made in china of weaker materials. They will cut like the good ones just need more force to cut anything. Now the ones I use at work are much better quality as there hardened german stainless steel that will cut quarters. The other difference is that these also cost 20 each instead of the 3 buck ones being sold to divers currently.

I carry an el-cheapo wal-mart stainless steel steak knife cut off at about 2" with the the corners rounded off. I typically never dive in situations where I would conceivably *need* a dive knife. But if I do, I know it's in a little nylon flashlight pouch just to left of my belt buckle on my BP&W rig. If I drop it, who cares. If airport security confiscates it, who cares. I can get another for about $3.

IMHO, no need to buy any $99 titanium XR-249 Kryptonium knife.

But .. that's just me ...

The Marriott Hotel in Manila, Philippines screened us and our bags before permitting us to enter the building to check in (might was well be an airport). They found a dive knife in my dive buddy's gear bag and confiscated it under their rule "no weapons permitted in the hotel." He will get it back upon checkout, but they could just as easily have a policy of disposal. My dive scissors presented no problem.

Meet a diver last night who had his dive knife confiscated out of his checked bag by Singapore authorities ... with no opportunity to get it returned.

^^ this ^^

Mine is carried in a small sheath on my waist belt, accessible with either hand.

I also have a line cutter strapped to my right forearm near my wrist. While often used for cleaning line that is snagged on coral, the primary intent is to deal with a jammed line that is attached to a SMB and pulling me up to the surface. The location minimizes the distance between the tool and where it is going to be used in an emergency, thus also minimizing the unintended ascent.

There is also a set of trauma shears in my 'emergency' (left side) hip pocket (along with the backup SMB and backup mask).
