I recently came across an article about harvesting sea cucumbers here in the Puget Sound. I read it with great interest, as I have been approached by non-diving asian friends before, asking if I ever see these strange relatives of sea stars while I'm diving. When I've told them that I see lots of the underwater oddballs, they get quite excited, and want me to collect some ( I haven't yet, by the way ). I wondered why, and they informed me that they love to eat them, which the article confirms. Prices for the cukes in asian countries ranges anywhere from $8 to $350 a pound, and they've been overharvested in many countries like so many other asian delicacies like sharks' fins, tiger ******s, sea urchins, etc.
What really caught my eye though, buried deep within the fine print, was the fact that the sea cucumbers are not only desired for cooking...
Sea cukes are nature's Viagra.
( Not that I'm implying that I, or any other male diver here on this board NEEDS any sea cucumbers in their diet... but isn't it nice to know that the sea cuke population here in my chilly northwest waters is WELL STOCKED with the critters. Yeaaah baby, yeaaaaah!!! )
So ladies... if you were looking for that perfect excuse to visit you-know-who up here in the gorgeous Pacific NW, now you have it...

Check out the thread re: sea cucumbers in the Galapagos. I'd posted there about the belief that sea cucumbers are an aphrodisiac.

I lived in Korea for a bit and they were very popular there. You could even pick the one you wanted to eat from tanks (like we do with lobster).

I can't speak for all cultures, but I know some Asian cultures only eat the longitudinal muscles on the sea cucumber.

Are you kidding? I never ate one of those things! LOLOLOL.
I had enough trouble choking down the raw (i.e. still wiggling) chopped octopus legs. (You could pick those out of a tank as well.)
